Question TL pulls to the right when accelerating from stop

is this a problem at all?

i am not an aggressive driver at all, but when i accelerate a little hard than usual from a stop, i have to hold the steering wheel tight because it would immediately want to pull to the right.

Is this the effects of torque steer? I just want to make sure that there's nothing wrong with the car, but just need to get used to holding the steering wheel a little tighter when stepping on gas a little harder.

BTW, i have a 2005 AT TL with 1000 miles on it.

This is indeed torque steer.

You can definitely feel it in 6MT when you accelerate from a stop.

doesnt the auto have limited slip differential? wouldnt this normalize the hard acceleration? i wonder why all the mags complained of torgue steer in the manuals but never seemed to mention it as an issue in the autos

No, I think its the manuals that have the LSD, which some think exacerbates the tourque steer. No LSD in the automatics. The auto tranny tends to attenuate the issue.

I seem to feel more torque steer after I take off from dead stop in my auto. I feel most between 10MPH ~ 40MPH range in first gear. It takes some muscle to get onto correct path. Especially if I'm changing lane during acceleration.

Nah, it's not your driving skills.

That's just the nature of FWD cars, especially with an open differential. It gets especially worse if the pavement is not even.

It is indeed the 6-speed that has the helical LSD, and in straight-line acceleration, the torque steer is not as bad because it distributes the torque more evenly. However, coming out of corners a little too hot, it gets pretty bad.

That is uneven brake application, not torque steer. I would have it checked by your dealer since it could be dangerous especially on wet pavement.

I get this with my TL also and had it with my 97 Camry V6 as well. It's the nature of FWD cars with the tranny off to one side. There will be slight uneveness with the torque distrubution with moderate or hard acceleration due to the eneven driveshaft lengths. It's fine with light accelertaion on level, fresh pavements.

Unfortunatelly this is what sets Acura TL behind competition....too many ponies on FWD configuration.

i think all FWD cars have torque steer. it's the problem when u steer and drive the car on 2 wheels. i came from a built 2.3 liter prelude engine. it was also turboed. after a while, i didnt even notice torque steer. when i launched, i just held the steering wheel hard.

I dont know if all FWD cars have torque steer, or if its only the transverse mounted
engine cars that have it.
My Passat was NOT a transverse mounted engine and had a LSD, and I
never noticed any torque steer in it.

Right on.... after years of driving Saab Turbos I don't notice the torque steer in the TL. It has much more power and exhibits torque steer but I've just programmed it out of my brain. Not intentionally but just by having FWD cars for a long time. Do I still get surprised once in a while by uneven pavement or if I am distracted ? Sure. But who hasn't accidentally slipped the ass of a RWD car ?

So personally my opinion about torque steer is "get over it". It simply isn't that big a deal to control and will become a thing you compensate for subconsciously.

Tell that to the guys running 350+ FWHP on their CLs and TLs.
