Timing belt tensioer leaking on 2006 accord V6?
Hello everyone i know this forum is not for hondas but i have 06 TL and my wife has 06 accord v6 so i thought both cars are very similar. today my wife went to honda dealership to have timing belt/water pump/ drive belt and coolant replaced for around $615. during the service they said the timing belt tensioner was leaking and wanted extra $800 to get it fixed. if we declined the tensioner replacement if it fails and cause damage to timing belt they will not cover new timing belt warranty. what is this timing tensioner and why does it cost so much more? we declined the tensioner replacement and want to do some research b4 getting it fixed. we plan to keep the car for another year or two is this something we need to get fixed right away? thanks in advance....

Extra $800!!!!? just for the tentioner? Thats BS toooo much, IIRC that part should be like $90 at most less than $150 parts alone, & while they are servicing the Tbelt anyways that should be part of the job as in labor. But if you need to replace it alone its like doing the tbelt replacement all over again. I would say if it was leaking it should've been replaced, You can go to an indi shop and have it replace.

As the tensioner should add $121 (part) to the bill, maybe they meant the total bill with the new tensioner would now be $800 and you misinterpreted their response.
Here's the part '06 Accord V-6:
14520-RCA-A01 tensioner, timing belt auto
Emission: KA - US Market Spec Origin: USA 001 $120.78

yeah i'm not sure since i wasn't there haha. if it was $800 total i would've get it done while they were doing the timng belt. how much will this job cost with parts and labor?

Actually, $615 for a timing belt change minus the tensioner seems a little high from what I've seen other Honda dealers charge for a TB change.
A little over 50% of the cost of a TB change is labor. If you don't replace the tensioner now (as Turbo said, it's only a $100 part), it'll cost you at least $300 in labor to go back in and replace it later, and that's assume the failed tensioner doesn't cause the TB to shred...
From what I've seen, you should be able to get the full TB change (including tensioner) done for under $700 at a Honda dealer. If you have other Honda dealers in your area, I'd shop around. If not, I'd go back to your dealer and ask them to explain why they are so high. As a last resort, I'd definitely fork over the extra $100-$150 to replace the tensioner now rather than take your chances.

Thanks everyone. Tb/water pump/ drive was already done. I was able to find a mechanic to do the tb tensional belt for a reasonable fee. Guess u can't trust woman to take car stuff lol
