"Tighten Gas Cap"

Anyone with an 07 TL-S, or any other TL ever have this reoccurring yet annoying display pop up from time to time? I've tried wiping it, twisting it to oblivion and barely putting it on. Any suggestions other than ask for a refund for my car?

might be the gas cap itself, just isnt sealing properly.... take it in to the dealer or try and get another gas cap from ur local auto parts store and see if that fixes it. if that doesnt work then go to the dealer

Turn it until it ratchets or clicks. Putting it on tight not "lightly". It must have a seal, "lightly" allows air in and vapors out that cause the light. It is an emission control device, so the cap and sensor are under warranty. Check your manual, about this condition. My past Hondas occasionally did this. The light comes on if the cap is not put on correctly. I recall the dealer told me it takes several starts before it clears even after you readjust the cap. The Type-S has the same gas tank, cap, etc. as the base TL, so it's not likely unique to Type-S. I don't think they will give you a refund after 2 years.

most likly it is the pcs valve. there have been a lot of problems with them. also make sure the seal on the gas cap is not white or ripped. the pcs controls the flow of evap into the engine. if it sticks it will cause the fuel tank pressure to go up or in your case down. the ecu see it as a leaks because the engine is sucking up the pressure in the tank.

i have had the warning twice in the last few weeks, and i havnt done anything different, so either the computer is loosing its mind or the cap seal is going bad....

To fix this problem requires part numbers:
17670-SHJ-A31 Fuel Filter Cap
17315-SDA-A02 Dust Filter
36162-RDV-J01 Pur Cont Valve
36166-RJA-A01 Purge Joint

This is a problem Acura knows about.

hmm i started getting this a few days ago. i thought it was just a one time occurance and then i saw it a couple times today. i had just got my atlp exhaust put on so i thought it was maybe that but probly just coincidence. so if i go to the dealer they will take care of this under warranty?

I also have an 07 TL-TypeS and this has been happening to me for the past year. i have taken it to the dealer 3 times. only three cause I travel alot. 1st time they just cleared the msg. 2nd time i got a new gas cap. 3rd time they had my car 9 days and said there was nothing in the computer and it didn't happen to them after they drove a mile even tho I told them it happens after about 20 mins of highway driving. I have 37,000 miles on the car so i figured I will take it back one more time and then if it happens when the warranty is up and they find the problem and want me to pay for it, i will have ammo for my lawyer to use. The thing is everytime i left the dealer the light would come back on.

Also the dealer does not return any of my phone calls or emails so i have to drive 35 miles just to get a status. i tried to put in a complaint, but the person i was dealing with is also the head of the service department. Guess I will have to report to BIG Acura. They did give me a loaner every time. The next time i will put a few thousand miles on it before I bring it back. Around this area its not that hard to do since I commute 80+ miles a day.

Well its one of three things.

The cap is bad

The threads are bad

Or you're not doing it right

The Tighten Gas Cap light used to come on three or four times per tankful. When I took my car to Radley Acura, they called Acura and was told to replace the parts I referenced above. I haven't had the problem since.

I am now having the same problem with my 08 TL Type S. I just turned 68K. Does anyone know if Acura is correcting this issue free of charge?

Thanks for your feedback.

I just wanted to pass on that I may have an unofficial fix on this problem.

To date it has fixed the problem for me.( Again, this is an unofficial fix and my vehicle is an 08 Type S)

1. Remove the cover off the intake manifold

2. Locate the Purge Control Value- This is located on the drivers side of the engine and bolts to the intake manifold in the back corner closest to the fire wall. It is very close to the throttle body. Look for the 2 vacuum lines the attach to the unit( Please see the attached link for a picture of the Purge Control Value #3- It also includes the price if you would like to replace it)

3. Unplug wire harness without unbolting the unit.

4. Start the veh with the harness unplug and leave running for 1 minute. ( Tighten Gas Light should stay on)

5. Turn the veh off and plug the harness back into the Purge Control Unit.

6. Start the vehicle and the Tighten Gas Cap should go off.

7. Put the Engine cover back on and you are done.

To date and a few hundred miles later the "Tighen Gas Cap" has not come back on.

If it comes back on, I will keep everyone posted and I will replace the Purge Control Value.

Hope this helps others.

Just an update.... My "Tighten Gas Cap" just came on after just over 500 miles since my little test.

I plan to just go ahead and replace PCV unit. I thought I would pass on for those who planned to follow my lead.

Thanks

I went ahead and replaced the Purge Control Value. I purchased the part via the below link. It was fairly easy. Below are the steps I followed

1. Remove the engine cover off the intake manifold

4. The unit is bolted on to the back of the intake on the drivers side( A 10mm socket does the trick) Be careful, the bottom nut is in a tight location and you could drop the nut and washer. I placed a shop towel under the unit in case I dropped the nut and washer.

5. Once the nut and washers are removed, use a pair of plyers to push the two hose clamps back and disconnect the two hoses.

6. Install the new unit in the reverse order as noted above

7. Put the Engine cover back on and you are done.

For those DIY... it was very easy to do.

I hope this helps others

Just wanted to add that I responded to this problem in another thread, here's the copy and pasted tech line summary from that post:

"To all of you, there is a Tech Line Summary that just came out for this. Applies to 07 TL-S's. Remembered reading it last week.

I've copied and pasted it for you. Might want to have the dealership try this, if they weren't already aware of it and tried it.

Tech Line Summary Article
If the “Tighten Fuel Cap” message is displayed on the MID but the vehicle passes the Service
Manual troubleshooting, use the following procedure to check the EVAP canister purge valve:
1. Run the engine at idle with the hood closed for 30 minutes
2. Hold the throttle at 2,000 RPM and monitor “EVAP PC DUTY” with the HDS.
3. Once the duty cycle reaches 90% or more, monitor the FTP sensor for 60 seconds
4. If the FTP sensor reading reads about 2.50 volts or if it fluctuates rapidly between about
2.3 volts and 2.5 volts install a known good EVAP canister purge valve
5. Test-drive the vehicle for several minutes at highway speeds. If the fuel cap warning
message stays OFF, replace the EVAP canister purge valve. If the warning message
comes back on test the EVAP system for leaks. (vc-rt, sn, 7700)"

This has been happening to my 08 TL-S for the past few months. Very intermittent, haven't noticed a pattern. Dealer already checked it once and basically just cleared the codes.
Next time I take it in, I'll tell them to replace the parts.
Thanks for the info everyone.
