Tighten fuel cap turned into check engine light p0456

Hello, I’ve had the tighten fuel cap message for the longest time, read that it was most likely the purge valve solenoid, finally got around to replace it. Was fine for about a couple of months but now getting a check engine light p0456, what are the chances it’s a bad purge valve solenoid again?

I have a 2008 Acura TL, I didn't run into any recalls or TSBs, but I didn't specifically look into it

That code on a 2008 TL is usually the result of a small leak in the evaporative emissions system which includes your fuel tank, fuel lines, hoses, a filter canister, and a purge valve. Any of these components could have a minor leak, so here is a complete list of areas you need to inspect to identify the cause:
  • Loose or cracked gas cap
  • Small leak in your fuel tank
  • Cut, rotted or missing fuel lines or hoses
  • Cracked charcoal filter
  • Damaged purge solenoid
Visually inspect everthing you can access. Then I would start by getting a new gas cap, preferably OEM or a good brand name. That will be one of the least expensive things you can try. After that make sure you aren’t overfilling the tank. If that does’t clear the code, then you should seek a professional who can use a smoke machine to test the system.

Similar issue : Tighten fuel cap turned into check engine. 2010 Acura TL 3.5 FWD - 233,300 miles. Changed fuel cap, no avail. Changed to OEM Purge Valve ( $148 + tax + shipping). Once changed, it's been a couple of months no Warning seen, and check engine has not come on. From forums, I learned not to purchase off brand Purge valve (you can find on ebay for $20, but they are schitty). On Amazon found one for $70, that matched 1:1 with the OEM, but decided not to take a chance. Fingers Crossed.
