"Tighten Fuel Cap" Message
Yes...I searched first, but it still left me with some unanswered questions -
The other day, the Tighten Fuel Cap message came up in my display while driving. I was pretty low on gas at the time, and was actually on my way to fill up. The cap wasn't loose, and the message is still on three days later.
I saw how many people have had this problem, and read about several different fixes. Most people seemed to have the problem intermittently. My question is more about the message in the display:
- A couple of posts said to hold the select / reset button down to get rid of it. That doesn't do anything for me. If I push it once (or push the left / right arrow button), I move to the normal display, however it still has a little "unread mail" type icon on every screen. Any way to reset this, or am I stuck with it for now?
- The message comes on immediately when I turn the key on. I have a hard time believing that the car is doing any type of test in that timeframe. It seems more to me like it's seeing a stored code. Once the message sets itself, is there some standard interval before it goes away, even once the problem is cleared? (Number of starts, mileage driven, etc.?)
I'm just wondering how long to give it to clear itself before I take it to the dealer. I dread taking any car to the dealer, especially this one, since the dealer is 40 minutes away.

There is a way deep inside the Navi Diagnostics screen that you can delete some codes/messages, but not all.
Hold Map/Menu/Cancel for about 3 - 5 seconds to enter diagnostics mode. Find the XM/Hip screen. Messages are stored in one of the sub-menus there.
Some have reported (iirc) some kind of sensor failure that caused the "Tighten Fuel Cap" message.
If everything is "back to normal" the message in the MID at startup should go away (iirc) in a few days.

i get the message all the time because my sensor is screwed up. I'm taking mine in tomorrow to get it fixed. Just take it to the dealer and get it over with. It's covered under the emissions warranty.

I got it once randomly and the cap was tight. After 3-4 days it was gone and has never come back. It's a common problem and fix especially if it remains. I believe it's the evap or purge solenoid, about $100 that is the usual culprit. If it continues and you're doing it yourself, you can always start with a new fuel cap since they're cheap.

Just thought about it, you can probably get it covered under the federal emissions warranty which I believe is around 100,000 miles. Same with cats and most emissions related components.

i had this problem with my accord. i fixed it my deleted the code with a code scanner. it worked and hasnt come on since. on the flip side there always is that possiblility that something is actually wrong, but wouldnt the code come back if that was the case?

I was just searching the threads because I got the same issue last weekend. Filled up on Friday night and Saturday morning this message came on the display. Pulled over, checked the cap and reset the message. Few more miles down the road display message again and now the navi displayed/voice the message check the cap, re-tighten and after a few days of normal driving the message would go away. By Monday it was gone and has not come back on.

Gas Cap Message
i know this is a very old thread but that soesn't matter.
I cleared my ongoing gas cap messages by trial and error.
My last attempt was just to clean up the gas cap.
No message for months
