Tensioner not budging

I have a 07’ base model TL I was trying to change the my serpentine belt due to current belt having a rip on it. When I push the tensioner back it moves about 1/4 of an inch and that’s it. I change that tensioner assembly about 2 years ago. I’m afraid of breaking it, I did research but found no one with this similar problem. What do ya guys think?

Sounds like it is time for another new tensioner.

give it more muscle power, using a long cheater bar will help greatly tho. I use a 3/8 ratchet that slide into my 3 ton floor jack handle.

Buy a new tensioner and have it ready to go, and break the old one. Swap in new one.

There ya go. Force the old one. Maybe it just needs a little loosening up. If it breaks, it apparently needed replacing anyways

Serpentine belt tensioners are cheap. I think I got one for around $20 from Rockauto about 6 months ago when I replaced mine.

Basically, yes, I was trying and the bolt would tighten even more, then it stopped and was touching the mount bracket. Was afraid to break it. So basically to change out, how would I take the tension off. Or just break it and that’s it ?

The one that is on the top tensioner pulley, you push that back and the tensioner releases it’s tension.

from the top bolt, push toward the back of vehicle. Don't worry about broke or loosen the bolt since its a left handed thread (meaning lefty = Tighten) beside you won't tight because the spring loaded tension around 35-40 ft-lbs anyway.

I starting with my tool at 2 oclock position and push it back to 11 oclock position (if you looking from the passenger side).

If you're using a breaker bar, it maybe too thick to clear the frame. I came across this a few weeks ago. I had to use my stanley 3/8" ratchet with some elbow grease to get the belt back on. A cheater bar would have worked too but i don't want to scratch the black off the ratchet handle.

So I tried to take the tension off and it was the tensioner metal that gave and broke (under the nut you see part of the tensioner). Last time I’m buying any major parts from autozone

so you broke the bearing dust cover washer. I just replace my tensioner assembly on the TL-S yesterday.

Well the tensioner metal is what broke, instead of the metal holding the nut in place so I can release the tension it decided to break away, I guess it was cheap material what ever they used. Replaced it with a dayco tensioner with Gates belt, what did you put on ?

I use OEM. I was fortunate enough to get the original one for 120k miles.
