Tachometer's never at 0 RPMs, even at complete stop.

at least I haven't seen this complaint on the 3G board yet:

Tachometer's never at 0 RPMs, even at complete stop.
I got my car today and honestly, I love EVERYTHING about it. No problems what so ever, knock on wood. Brakes are perfect, no odd noises, car handles beautifully. The only thing I noticed is that even at a complete stop, the tachometer needle is never at 0 or close to 0 RPMs. At a complete stop, the needle's just under 1. Is this normal?

actual post on bmw forum:

The needle BETTER be under 1 and not at 0 or else your car isnt ON!!!! The car is at idle when you are at a complete stop. The pistons are moving, therefore revolutions are taking place just a slower rate. THIS IS NORMAL. Every combustion engine does it!

the person was prob thinking that the tach was RPMs for the wheels.not the engine...meaning if the car is stopped....it should read zero

No Prob .. easy fix for her ... park (in a non-traveled space), open window, turn key to "off" position, throw key out window, take bus.
