Starting motor problem

Starting motor problem
99 tl, 198,000 miles
1st time tried and failed starting -no click nothing.(park and neutral positions)
Have not had any alternator or charging system problems
Checked headlights and they looked strong.
Called AAA
He cleaned battery terminals which were badly corroded and then jumpered; would still not start- no click nothing.
Guy fiddled with wires near starting motor terminals and eventually got it started. His explanation had something to do with wire to solenoid but was not clear to me.
Battery was fine according to his testing .
Do you think it was start solenoid or wire to solenoid or what?
What tests can I make before I bring it to a mechanic?
I have meters.
I very much appreciate your help here.

You posted in the 3rd gen area. Yours is 2nd gen. So most people here only know about 3rd gen's but some of this troubleshooting can apply to your car too.
You have a solenoid and a starter. On 3rd gen's they are mounted together. And you have to buy them together. So if one or the other that is bad, then you replace both. nevertheless, if he started the car, then the start itself is probably ok.. But the solenoid sounds like it is bad.
I would check the solenoid. If it is like the 3rd gens, then you need to check for continuty between 2 of them posts. Its not the battery cable post. If no continuity, replace the solenoid..But in the 3rd gen, you would have to replace both starter and solenoid.
Post in the 2nd gen section. They might have more info. But in either case, unless you just have a bad wire, then odds are you will have to replace the starter and solenoid. But I would look through a manual for your car. If the starter has 200k miles on it, then I am surprised it lasted this long. Mine went out at 68k miles.
