A-spec front lip gaps - problem or normal?

Just had the dealer put on the a-spec front lip. 10% discount for buying the car there and used my $100 gift card I got when I bought it for an out the door price of $290... not that bad given it's a dealer.

Anyway being picky the first thing I noticed were gaps, especially in the area where the lip meets the grill... pics below.... are these normal or are they fixable? When I push the plastic back about 1/4" it lines up perfectly but of course doesn't stay there as the "rest" position seems to be outward a bit too far. Other than that the spoiler looks great. Has anyone ever tightened these up? I was thinking the 3m double sided tape used for spoilers and antennas might do it if used on the backside of the lip and pressed into the bumper.

On the plus side the body lines do match up, I know some people complain that is hard to do with the a spec kit.

BTW for "good" pics of my car see the photo gallery forum, I just posted the new look there!

Picky !!! You must be kidding me ! You buy a $45k (CND) car that is extremely well put together and that is what they left your car looking like !!!

A few months ago I also bought a TL and had the "A" spec skirt package installed.
The first package they installed didn't look nearly as bad as yours and I had them replace it with a new package. My point being that I'm not putting a Acura part on my car that does not fit as well as the rest of the car. I also involved the dept. manager at that time who took care of me from that point on.

The second package didn't look much better than the first, and this time the side skirts also rubbded on the front doors. The manger knew it didn't fit right, but he tried to tell me that was the best they could do, he also knew I wasn't going to settle for mediocrity so we discussed options.

The manager involves the district manager then Canadian Tech. support, yaddy, yaddy, yaddy. After acknowleding the problem he suggests we install the third kit at an Autobody shop if I'm ok with.

It's been 3 weeks now and everything looks great, as most know the back trim does not meet up with the side lines of the car. However I can live with that as I knew that before purchasing the kit, and who knows Aura may have some reason for the design.

Anyway get back to your dealer and demand a proper kit and installation!

P.S. on the front of your car they didn't even install the rubber seal, as they gap is so big it wouldn't have stayed in place anyway.

BTW nice color. I have the same one with A-spec kit. My front lip has gaps too. When I first had my A-spec installed I noticed the same thing. I said this is unexceptable. I went back to the dealer told my service advisor she said they would have to order a new front lip. When the lip came in I had the lip replaced and again same thing happened. She explained to me that the manufactuer makes thousands of these out of molds and when they dry and hardend they always don't match and you wont get a 100% snugged fit. Extra tape won't work. The only way you can fix the issue is if you have cork like substance put in the crack and press against the piece thats not snugged on the bumper until it dries. Its like glue. Thats your only alternative. I got over it though. Its not that noticable until you look very close.

At my Acura dealer I see a TL A-spec on the showroom floor with gaps. Minor gaps. Also on the lot I see some with gaps and others with no gaps. Its the molding.

You guys think I should have them re-do it? From 3 feet away you can't even notice any gaps... I'm a little dissapointed but I don't know if I am "take it back and demand a whole new install" dissapointed. I don't know... hmm.

There are gaps, but yours look too big. When I got my installed, I took it to my local body shop. The shop told me that the dealer (Pohanka Acura) has been sending them cars with kits that have not been installed properly by their in-house tech. i would take it back to get it repositioned.

I too had this issue when they installed my A-Spec skirts. The dealer tried to fix the gaps by trying to replace the tape, but this would not hold. I actually got the dealer to order a complete new set of skirts and they were installed and this corrected the problem. No more GAPS anywhere!

Since these pieces are mouled, there is a varriance from each set. I know that some folks have tried stronger tape and it holds much better, but if the pieces are way off.....see if you can get a new set ordered.

Well, I'm going to try some tape pieces first. I think I can see where some strategically placed tape would work. Where can I get that 3m double sided auto tape? Like the stuff my ebay spoiler had on it, that worked really well.

I went my local body shop and they told me that they can fix it with the cork like substance. Go to a body shop in your area they should be able to do it.

I had a good idea... it's the tape they put on which is pulling away causing the gaps... I can press it on and it sticks for like 2 seconds and then pulls away again. On monday I will pull it away from the car even more to make the gap very large and then take it in so they can see the problem in an exxagerrated way. Not ridiculous but so that it's very clear what is happening. That should get thier attention.

Tape was useless as WDP-TL said above... should have listened But it was educational as in the process I saw how the tape was used in the original install and that it is peeling away, inside the lip, about 2 inches or so is pulled away and won't stick without tearing off again due the pressure of the mold shape. So, I'm going ot take it to the dealer... gotta wait till monday to call now tho I guess :[

UPDATE: After looking at the car for an hour or so today, they concluded at the dealer that it was fitted correctly, and therefore the part must be warped and defective. So, they have a new one coming in but will take a full week >:[ Oh well... At least it will be free... (and i chipped my lip a little trying to apply new tape anyway so new = good)
