Side Mirror Needs an Exorcism

Went through about 6-7 pages of Forum postings tied to "side mirror" but didn't see my condition exactly. I'm driving an '05 TL 6MT. The passenger side view mirror moves randomly on its own when I'm driving and I'm not sure why. Before you suggest a fix or share a thought please consider these other data points: 1) the common clicking when moving is not my problem. I actually took off the mirror and greased the motor using the Forum posting; 2) I can move the mirror in every direction from the control; 3) with the selector switch on the passenger side, the mirror does adjust when I put the car in reverse although not always to the ideal position- so it does move; 4) I drive with the side view mirror adjusted all the way out to cover the blind spot; 5) When I'm driving down the road, the mirror will move in stages or all at once to face inward- so I have to use the control to adjust it back all the way out; 6) I've tried putting the selector switch to the neutral/middle spot OR on the driver side mirror and the passenger side mirror will still move. My thought is that by doing so it will eliminate any signal going to the passenger side mirror (guess I was wrong). Based on looking at all the side mirror posts tide to movement issues, replacing the actuator/motor is the likely solution. Personally, since I can still control the side mirror, I'm just considering it an inconvenience and conditioned myself to periodically look over to make sure it's adjusted to where I want it. This random movement happens any time, regardless of weather. Just trying to understand why esp. when I don't have it selected with my selector switch. Thanks.

Mirror has "resistive strip" to know in which position it is. When I greased mine, some of the grease were left on that strip and mirror was moving downwards all the time. Check that. But it was happening only when I unlocked the car, and it wanted to adjust to my saved position.

When it randomly happens, are you driving at this time?

My thinking is that some wire is shorting, or module is bad.

Thanks for posting and sharing your thoughts. To answer your question, yes when the passenger side mirror moves (outward to inward) I've only noticed it when I'm driving, regardless of speed. To be fair, I'm rarely idling in my car for extended times so I haven't seen it move in that scenario. I agree that shorting is within the realm of possibility. Next time I take the mirror apart, I'll look to see if anything is amiss. Thanks again.

I replaced the glass for my passenger mirror on my '12 TL and afterwards it was doing the exact thing that you are describing. I was very confident that the mirror was on there properly and there was something wrong with it. But I decided to take the mirror apart again and put it back on to be sure. I must have missed a clip or something when I replaced the glass because when I put it back on and was 100%sure each clip was secure and the mirror was on there perfectly, the problem went away completely. It hasn't moved the slightest since. So before going any further I would suggest you be 100% sure its on there properly, maybe when you greased it and put it back on, one of the clips didn't fully engage. Hopefully its something simple like this like mine was.

Like peter6 mentioned... I'd check the resistive strips on the mirror actuator. I had a similar problem (along with the clicking mirror), so I disassembled my actuator and greased the mechanical parts, and cleaned the contacts on the resistive strips/metal contact. Those are used to sense the current position of the mirror, so if the contact is bad, dirty, etc... it won't know where it's at and try adjusting it to the right spot.

There are some pics of the disassembled assembly in this post: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-p.../#post14953408 . Make sure the strip on the PCB and metal contacts on the part that looks like a clip is clean (not covered in lithium grease).

Thanks! Going to try this out and see if it fixes the condition!

I also searched pages of forums but can't seem to find the right answer for my similar issue. Both of my mirrors move to a random position once I unlock and open my driver side door. I looked through the manual how to properly adjust the mirrors. Based on their description you are supposed to set the mirrors while the car is on setting II (engine off but accessories on). Even when I adjust them back to their proper location and put the switch in the neutral position, they still randomly move. Does anyone have a fix for this or experienced similar issue. I've literally almost got into a couple of accidents because of this.

I was told they are tied into the seat position memory control board. All programming is done for the mirrors and the seat programming on the same circuit board. That is what is going bad. Mine would hold memory for about a day and then get a "mind of it's own" and wander all over the place and stop with it facing the sky!

Does anyone know what part number that is? I just did a Google search and couldn't find it.
