Shift Knob - rough feel

So, we all knew this was going to happen.

The Shift Knob on my 2004 6MT looks like needs some help. The top where it says all the gears (1-6 and Reverse) is coming apart. Well to be more clear, the 'color' is peeling off and it's feeling rough in my hand.

Has anyone attempted to take it apart and fix it? If so, how do you do it? What you use to paint it?

I know you need to take the boot off (really hard to do) then unscrew the knob, but can you even fix it or better to buy a new one?

of course you can buy a new one.
there are also aftermarket knobs that you can buy to replace the stock one.
the aftermarket ones are cool because they have many options in shape, weight, and can be counter-sunk.
