Replace Differential Carrier Bearings

I took my '04 TL for my A12 service this week. My mechanic informed me that DCBs have play. The car has about about 113K miles on it. Has anyone encountered this problem? Thanks.

What symptoms are you having? Whine or clunking? What does the magnet look like when you drain the fluid?

have you had any odd colored fluids under your car lately? Also have you ever changed out the transmission fluid? IF so what color was it and at what mileage?

Good point. I forgot the the play in the carrier will make the axles turn out of round and kill the seals.

I have not notice any fluids under the car. I had the fluid replaced at about 100K. My mechanic did not mention any concerns with fluid color. So this problem is a normal problem? Is it a sympton of something larger? Thanks for everyone's help.

Strange for the mechanic to say that since the inner CV joints are only "held" in place with a rather flimsy looking "C" circlip on all Honda/Acura's so the diff's always feel loose to me. Is this mechanic a Honda/Acura mechanic? Since if they are not familar with the Honda method of attaching the driveshafts to the transaxle. The first time you remove one, you gotta wonder how they don't fall out.

To answer your questions

Not a normal problem, in fact I've never heard of anyone having it before.

If the diff bearings are bad, the debris from them could also cause alot of damage in other parts of a automatic before the fluid goes through the filter (i.e. the ATF pump).

I'll have top look at the shop manual for the test procedure as to what the spec is for the bearing play.

Threads like this make me glad I have a real filter on my transmission. At least it won't take out the whole thing if you get some contamination.

To all - thanks for the input. Legend2TL I take my TL to Benchmark (Columbia). They typically work on Mercedes and BMWs. They hired a mechanic that worked on Acura's and that is who did the service and inspection. This model year had the recall on the transmissions. I most likely will take to a dealer for a "second opinion" to see where that leads. I hear what sounds like a distant vaccuum cleaner sound when I accelerate.

Benchmarks a good shop (my brother has had some of his BMW's worked at there). Since the mechanics whow worked on your's is familiar with Acura's then he's probably aware of the sloppy feeling inner CV joint of the driveshaft connection to the transmission. If a BMW mechanic there felt he he would probably think something was wrong since the Lobro CV joints on BMW's and Mercedes are bolted to the differential with 6 allen head bolts.

I agree it's definitely worth a second opinion since you're talking about ALOT of money for evena rebuilt 5AT transaxle.
