Removing Center Console - Automatic

My light under for the shift lever is out so I tried to replace it by removing the center console. However, I ran into a stubborn screw that just kept turning in place so I couldn't remove everything. I managed to get to the part where I need to remove the bottom console (the two trays + trim around shift lever) but then the trim comes in contact with the inner silver part of the shift lever (the piece with P-R-N-D-L). How do I go about this problem? Any input will be appreciated. I looked at the service manual but all it says is remove the outer silver trim for automatic and the rest is shown with manual transmission. I also looked at the video posted by another fellow acurazine member but he had a stick shift as well =/

so you're just trying to replace the gear shifter light? the actual bulb is located near the bottom left hand side of the gear shifter.

if you want to remove the entire center console, put your shifter ALL the way back towards you. you can do this by sticking your key in that little tiny rectangle flip up part on the shifter itself (top left area on shifter). just stick the key in and press down...at the same time, pull the knob part all the way back. this will give you room to remove the rest of the console.

BUT like I said earlier, if you're just trying to replace the light it's a clear tiny bulb in the bottom left hand area under the shifter. you should be able to find it easy.

Will I be able to see it from the rear? Because there's a black plastic "wall" that covers each side. Mine's an 05, if that makes any difference. Thanks for the information though!

yeah you should be able to see it, bottom left area. you'll have to pinch the bulb part to pull it out. it's on a tiny short harness and then just replace it with the new bulb.

I might even have a picture on my photobucket...I'll look and post it tomorrow when I get into work.

there you go. looks like you'll need to remove the black/cf plastic area surrounding the shifter area to gain access to the bulb. but maybe not, I don't really remember but I think I had everything removed at the time bc I was replacing my seat heater bulbs and installing a DVD player in the bottom cubby.

Soo I was able to squeeze my hand through the black plastic and other plastic parts and finally changed my light!!! Turns out the light was fine all along..... I looked through the manual to see which fuse might be the problem but couldn't really find one that applies. Does anybody know or am I out of luck?

The two seat warmer light is off too. Is there a fuse that controls all of them? Any input will be appreciated!

I switched the light bulb with the one in the center arm rest and it turned on while the one under the shift lever remained unlit.
I'm thinking it's either a fuse or the wiring. The light bulb itself has no problem whatsoever.

Thanks swoosh but no matter how much I tap on it, it won't come on. Either the bulb is out or wiring needs to be replaced. For the shift lever light, the light bulb itself is fine because I replaced it with a working one, so I either need to change the fuse (if there is one...) or the wiring or something needs to be replaced. Thanks for your help and kindness!

no problem Ray, here to help....

so there is a fuse for the heated seat in the driver footwell (if my memory serves me right)....there is one for driver side and one for the passenger side....however, the fuse is for the heating coil and not the bulb....so if you turn on the heated seat and the seat warms up but the light doesnt come on, then you bulb is gone, wiring + fuse + heated seats are working fine....if you hit the switch and nothing happens, then it could be the fuse or the wire might have come loose or coil is not working (one of those things)....

The seat warmers DO work on both sides. The bulb itself looks perfectly fine though. Maybe it's the connection or something. Oh well, I guess I'll just put everything back together for now. Thanks so much for all your help though! I really really appreciate it!

Replace that little bulb under the shifter (5AT also). I always wondered if that was supposed to light up lol. Can you just put the key in, move the shifter down and pull up to get enough room to get to that bulb?? Or do you have to do something else? Can't tell if the OP is doing other stuff at the same time so wasn't sure if I needed to do all that.

Also...anyone know what type of bulb that is? I'll go pick one up before I dive in.

Well the light bulb for the seat warmers I haven't actually switched with another working one so I can only speculate, but judging from the wire inside connected and not blacked out, it looks like it should work.
But for the shift lever light bulb, I switched it with the one in the center arm rest (which works) and it still wouldn't light up.

I'm just thankful that there are people out there to help out those in need like me

You have to take apart most of the center console. What I did was take off the plastic under the steering wheel and the two plastic pieces on the side (next to your knee) and then the center arm rest piece (I just scooted it back a few inches). From the driver's side, you'll see a black plastic tube looking piece that pretty much covers everything. There's a white tab that you can pull out and that will give you enough space to see the wiring for the light bulb. Then you just tug at the wire lightly to expose the bulb and then you can change it! Then screw and put everything back together

I don't know what type it is but I can give it a shot at describing it lol
It's one of those bulbs that you just plug in. Circular at top and flat at the bottom. It's similar to the ones in your front doors to light the floor. Just pop off the plastic cover and see. The shift lever one is smaller by about 1/4 to 1/2.

Similar to this.

Sorry I don't know the part # or size # though

I found out today that if you just loosen the armrest/cupholder unit (screws at the bottom of the main storage), back that up a bit, loosen the screws holding the panels on both the left and right (near the shifter), you can spread them just enough to give you enough room to loosen shifter cover and give you access to the bulb. You just pull the bulb out and push in the replacement. LED replacement works great.
