Reminder to check your CV Axles

Just a reminder to check your CV axles especially if you live in a rust prone area. The issue of CVs rusting through is pretty well documented here. I learned the hard way after my passenger CV snapped. Decided the driver's side needed to go too and it was a good thing I did. Pulled up the rubber balancing donut and it looked like beavers chewed through the axle.

You can see above where the donut cracks. Then it lets water in and keeps it there. Easy enough to spot without taking everything apart. If yours looks like this then it might be time

Not sure how much longer it would've made it but I'm glad I didn't find out. Nearly half of the diameter of the axle is gone.

I've had both of mine replaced, but at different times. Believe they were approx a year apart in late Fall or early Winter when temps started to drop. Colder temps thicken the grease in the joint It wasn't because of failure complete failure but I was getting the tell tale "click, click, click" sound when pulling away from a dead stop while turning.

WOW!!, I've never seen such bad corrosion on a half-axle shaft before.

Is that top pic of the right side intermediate shaft with the bearing?

Another very common issue with these 3rd gen TL's. It's important to have these vehicles properly inspected every 3-5 months as preventative maintenance. Even though I rarely use my TL, I always give it a very through inspection every 3 months. When it goes for service, I always stress to have the vehicle checked, especially the lower ball joints and lower control arms. I replaced my axles 10 years ago with new OEM ones. In the last 10 years my TL has racked 4,000 miles or so.. Axles are still in good condition, no noises and no rust.

Nope the intermediate shaft was okay. The one pictured is the driver's side shaft.

Haha good luck, how many miles are on it now? Is it modified? The cars that bring the most money are bone stock with low miles.

My drivers side finally busted after 349k miles. Although I did drive with the clicking noise for several years. It is nice to be able to turn in silence now.

It's one of the most pristine condition 2004 TL. 6MT, Navi, A-spec with lots of tasteful, well done modifications and meticulously taken care of. The car is like a time capsule. It has 99,XXX miles. I have a build thread in the photography section.

Some photos

Looks very nice.
But I am confused. You said you only drove it 4k miles in the past 10 years. That must be a typo. I was expecting it to have like 20k miles, not 100k miles. I will check your thread out. Not to hijack this thread on a rusted CV axles.

What about the intermediate shaft. I’ve had my passenger side axle snap on me. My intermediate shaft connected to the axle that snapped is fully orange with surface rust. Not sure if this is a cause for concern.
