Really weird problem.

I was driving home and was driving in tiptronic but for some reason it just would not shift after 3rd and even though the shifter was in M and I was trying to shift it just would not budge. The instrument panel did not show the gear I was in after I shifted out of 3rd to 4th and was shifting on its own as if I was driving in D. I ended up having to turn the car off at a red light then turn it back on and then I could drive it in M, but it just bugs me as to why it happened.

I was shifting at 3000-4000 rpm which too me seems normal and nothing out of the ordinary.

Suspect the micro electric control switches (not the official name) located underneath the shifter- if liquid is spilled in the cup holder area and makes its way down to the switches- you will get funky problems
Is that a possibility on your car- soda went wild recently?

the repeat shift problem you speak of I think your shifting a little too early

try shifting around 3000rpm-3500rpm range
