Rattling sound on cold start....
Winter is around the corner and I know this is just gonna get worse. When I start the car cold, there is a really annoying sound near the engine..it's almost like the coming from the passenger side of the engine. It goes away when the car fully warms up. I can feel the car vibrating a little from the inside. I haven't done my water pump and timing belt yet and I'm thinking tha might be it. It's not my power steering pump and I recently changed my tensioner but I'm certain that has nothing to do with it. Thanks for the inputs!

if the front mount is bad, then yes it can cause a vibration.
again, its super hard to diagnose something that I cant see, feel, or hear.
you'll need to figure out where the sound is coming from.
have some one else start the car and look for the noise

Do you have a aftermarket j pipe installed because right after I installed it I heard the same rattling that your talking about I just chalked it up to the light weight j pipe shaking

yes,...that was part of the problem I experienced.
Cold start rattle. Once warmed up, it would go away.
Sound came from the passenger side wheel area.

Could it possibly be a timing belt tensioner or idler? I know I am coming up on a timing belt service and both parts are on the REPLACE DURING SERVICE list. Mine as well has a rattling on cold starts, but disappears after the engine has reached operating temperature.

i changed the tensioner....that solved the problem of hearing the sound after the engine is warmed up...but this is different...it only happens when its very cold outside..im gonna upload a video later on...

Search for a TSB that's called (I think) Chirp from timing belt area. My car had a rattle on cold start - and I mean COLD as in the air temp was below 40- that turned out to be covered by this TSB. The problem on some TLs and MDXs is that the mounting surface for one of the pulleys isn't plumb, which makes the T-belt run at a slight angle and rubs up against something else until the block warms up and presumably changes shape just enough to stop the noise. The fix was to install a taper shim behind the pulley, and do a full timing belt kit / water pump replacement.

I also had a tick/rattling noise upon a cold start up that would go away after the engine came into operating temps. I did my timing belt not to long ago. When i went to take off the old timing belt it was pretty loose. That may have been what was making those noises.. All noises were gone after the timing belt job.
