Rattling from powertrain when accelerating...?

My 2005 TL 5AT is rattling upon 1st accelerating... the rattle is light, but there. First thought was cat converter, but I would think my CEL would set, right?

I just canceled my Acura Care for a refund and might be too late to reverse that. I'm at 55k almost, I think. I'm getting really concerned now that I'm seeing people with 05's loosing their tranny's at 60k, 100k, etc. Really scary! My Acura care was only good for 97,900 miles, and I canceled it because I drive so much that I knew I would be at 100k in less than 2 years.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Also, my A/C compressor makes a lot of noise when it clicks on and off, even as it runs. Sounds like its grinding or something. Again, the noise isn't loud, loud, but I notice it.

Man I hope I didn't screw up on buying this car, I got it just 2 months ago with 48k miles. It drives pretty awesome though... :/

What should I do???

Dealer has the car, gave me a loaner.

I didn't cancel my AcuraCare. Thanks goodness.

They have found/realized....

That the front brakes click when applied.
The power steering pump is fried, and the recall is being done.
The A/C compressor grinds/makes bad noises.
And are addressing my rattle by following the instructions in the march service news of 2006.

I'll let you know what happens...

Okay so this is the update.

They called today and said that the serpentine belt tensioner is causing the bad noise and that it will cost $450.00 to replace. Shocked, I referred to the Hondacare extended warranty I bought, and ofcourse, it says right there, that the serpentine belt tensioner is a covered part.

The dealer knows I have the extended warranty, they've already tighten the control arm bolts that were causing the clicking when the brakes were applied, under that warranty. Apparently the noise associated with the A/C compressor is also related to this tensioner.

I called the dealer, already aggravated that they tried to put me out $450.00, and explained that the contract states this is covered. A new service adviser spoke to me and said that they would "look into it". Great.

Day 3 in the 2008 TL loaner... surprisingly enough it is pretty much the same feel as driving my 05. A good thing, after nearly 60k miles, compared to 3k miles.

The saga continues...

Ok!

So the tensioner was replaced under acuracare, I paid for the belt.

Noise is still there, so they moved onto replacing the alternator. Dealer gave me a sketchy explanation saying that they wanted to start with the least expensive part first, and now they're pushing for Honda to goodwill the alternator. I asked why not just claim it under my acura care, they said "well its just less paperwork this way". I guess it doesn't matter, but either way, I have protection, which is good.

Soooo. My $1100 warranty has almost paid for itself.

$210 worth of claims yesterday.
$450 claim to replace the tensioner today.

God only knows what the alternator will cost, I assume at least $500-$600 at the dealer.

Once again, warranty proves to be worth it. So glad I didn't cancel.

tell them to check the headshields to see if they are loose, that can cause rattling while accelerating.

Yeah, I already asked them to address that. It was mentioned in the March 06 service news.

They're positive it's the alternator... part isn't going to be there until tomorrow. Day 4 with the 08 TL loaner... I've already put over 800 miles on it. If only the gas was free!

05GRYTL, is this only when the car has not been driven for a while or is this a noise you hear all day long? I am having a similar problem. It is on the right side of my 05 TL and only happens if the car has been sitting for a little while. After driving half a mile or so, the noise is gone. I recorded a video of it this morning and will be uploading it later tonight when I get home.

It was just when cold, now it is constant.

I drive my car constantly, it seems. So I wouldn't really know what the effect of it sitting a while would be. Longest my car has sat since I took ownership is MAYBE 10 hrs... maybe.

I put 135k miles on my 2004 S40 in less than 4 years, I put over 8k miles on this TL since late august.

Below is a link to the sound that my car is making. Is it similar to yours? It is difficult to hear. After the sexy humming sound, you hear the rattling noise. Any input would be much appreciated.

hmmm...

not really. your car sounds kinda like a bad turbo, yet it has none! (how my S40 sounded when it went out)

Mine is very metallic and sounds like a grinding sometimes. Maybe the video distorts your noise, which really might sound just like mine...

I wish I bought my car from an Acura dealership. I picked it up from a Nissan dealership and had them throw in their Silver warranty that covers 36k miles. I'd much rather take it to Acura but will see if Nissan can take a look at it. Thanks for listening bro and good luck.

I bought my car from Pontiac. I just happened to buy the Acuracare after from www.myhondawarranty.com . I was still within the 4 yrs/50k.

Your warranty is only valid at that dealer???

That's not really common, read the contract.

I always assumed that's how warranties worked. This is the first car I purchased with a warranty. I'll have to look into it.

Alright. I'm at my wits end here.

Acura calls, "car is ready", "what'd you do to it?" "we corrected the noise by replacing the alternator, serpentine belt, and tensioner", "how much?" "$985.65 before the warranty covers it 100% sir.".

I got there, got my car, drove it... Noise is still there.

This time I had a tech, service advisor and service manager there to hear it. The tech goes "oh that's a heat sheild."

EXACTLY, what I said it was in the FIRST place. 5 days almost, without my car, because of a freaking loose heat sheild.

Tomorrow, I shall have my car back, again. Noise free, I hope.

08 TL loaner came to be with 9k miles on it, it will have 10k+ when they get it back. :o I miss my car, it drives better than this 08, not to mention looks better.

I found out that Nalley Acura accepts the Fidelity warranty that I signed up for at Nissan. I am taking my lady into the shop tomorrow to diagnose the issue. I hope the problem is covered under this warranty.

I would find another dealer to do your service, either a more competent Acura dealer, or maybe a Honda dealer.

It's a little late now. It's been over there for a week almost.

Not gonna start all over... I really think my service adviser is the problem. I have a new one now, and plan to talk about my old one when I get my customer satisfaction call after I pick my car up.

Honda service does not compare in quality. I had a 2003, and a 2008 Accord. I can't be without a car and Acura gives free loaners, thankfully.

Well I've had my car back for almost a week now. I was happy to give Acura their 09 and 08 TL loaners back. Neither one made my heart race like my 05 does. Maybe my V6 is broken in compared to the 08 I drove, regardless, the 05 felt lighter on its feet than either of them.

The noises are gone, though I am monitoring my A/C compressor. It does not sound pleasant when it kicks on and off. It will probably be next to go.

60k miles here I come! We'll see how long my tranny holds out for.

The solution was in fact a new heatshield. Why they didn't just tighten the old one, I don't know. Acura care covered my $700 alternator, $220 worth of diagnostics and adjustments to various things, $450 serpentine belt tensioner, and the $200 heatsheild (what a rip!) replacement.

All is well, though.

That's crazy! I took mine in for some repairs under Acura Care and they said that it wouldn't cover the heatshield.

They might have had honda "goodwill" it? I think they used that for the alternator... idk why.
