Rattle in the steering area - A fix I found
My 2006 TL began to develop a rattle around the steering wheel while going over fairly bumpy road which would continue on smooth pavement as well when it began.
But then, there were days when the car would be as quiet as a church.
I had managed to rule out the steering wheel itself, but had isolated the noise right next to the radio on the left...
On my way home yesterday I began to poke around that area when the noise was coming to see if I could "fix" it and then have the dealer really fix it. And lord behold, I suddely hit something that made the rattle completely stop.
On my car there is a flap (unsure how large as I haven't gotten down there to see it yet) that covers the bottom of the steering column. You can put your fingers down there and lift the flap.
Well it was this flap that isn't held down by anything that has been flapping around. I confirmed it by going over exteremly bumpy roads and holding the flap up with my fingers and noticed that my car is eerily quiet.
Now doing all of this with a 6MT was quite interesting as my wife was giving me strange looks (her Jeep doesn't rattle, of course!)..so now I just need to figure out what I can jam in there to stop this flap from moving until someone has to get to something in the steering column.
So for all you folks with steering rattles, see if this will help you at all..
If not..sorry..
Regards

The rattle on my 2006 came from the ignition switch. Although, the rattle didn't happened too often, it was loud. Dealer replaced the ignition switch and programmed my keys. That rattle is now gone.
