Pre-Cat stud snapped off

I was in the process of installing my PCDs and the rear pre-cat stud snapped off. The rear pre-cat stud which is the lowest one on the driver side.
How would I get the snapped stud off in such a tight space? Thanks for the help guys.

There are 2 precats and the main cat, on which one did the stud break?

The rear precat stud snapped off. The stud that mounts to the engine.

1 of 4. Did it break off flush with the head?

Yes, 1 out of the 4 snapped. The snapped stud is flush. Not sure what to do...SUCKS!
I was thinking about just using some high temp RTV and use it too if I can extract the broken stud out. Not sure if I will develop a leak or not.

Oooh I have done that before. You can try a few things:

Cut a grove with a dremel tool and attempt to use a flat head to turn it.

If there is a tiny bit sticking out, do the reverse of the screwdriver idea and cut a tab you can put vice grips on tight as hell.

Have a guy who is really good at welding put a rod or nut on top and weld it to the stud, then turn the nut.

If all those fail you can start picking and drilling it out until it is all gone and use a thread tapper with possibly same or bigger bolt.

Good luck. When this happened to me I was getting really frustrated as it was on a freahly rebuilt engine. Lucky for me the engine was outside the car so I brought it to a machine shop and had them do the extraction.

You mean just use the other 3? I am 95% sure you will get a leak. You need to fix it.

That sucks.. good suggestions..
3 out of 4 aint bad..

Personally.. take it to a shop and try the weld method.
Any other method will be a bigger PITA.

DeWalt has this sweet ass angled driver 20V
If you have a steady hand and a lot of patience.. you could drill it out potentially.
You'd need a good bit..

Or just drill enough to smack an extractor in there. spray it with some pb while drilling.
I did this for a snapped 10mm bolt on the AC compressor pulley. That was a real bitch.

ONE time I had one of those bit extractors work. I say one time, because all of other ten or so times I have tried them they didn't grip, broke off in the bolt, stripped it out, and overall just made it worse. But if you're feeling lucky....

The screw-in extractors suck.. I'm talking about the double edge ones where you smack it into the hole.
Just create a divot with a drill.. just enough to pound / notch in the extractor.

I used this one on the 10mm bolt. Worked like a charm!

I broke a carbide bit trying to make a hole for the extractor.. just used the nub to keep drilling.

Before you attempt almost any of these extraction methods you would need to pull the engine. nothing sticking out to weld a nut onto? such a tight spot not sure what you can do.

Yooo I want some of those. I have never tried them but I really like Craftsman products. Not that they are the be all end all to tools, but my set contains a lot of Craftsman stuff.
