Possible tranny problem?

I have an o6 TL, with 63,000miles on it. Normal every day driving, the tranny switches gears smooth with no problems. I noticed a couple weeks ago that when I wanted to pass an annoying car in front of me going too slow that when gassed it, the car kicked down to 2nd gear then hit the rev limiter and would not switch to third until I let off the gas completely and then push down gas pedal gradually. Now it does this in second and third gear now.
I switch the tranny to manual and it still does it between first and second gear, the car revs up to about 5,000 rpms and just doesn't want to switch into the next gear. yesterday my check engine light turned ,please help, i have no idea where to start.

The first thing would be to see which codes it's throwing. If it's a trans code, it's going to be pretty generic and not tell you a whole lot. The dealer will interpret any trans code as a complete failure.

There are the normal things to check, fluid level and condition.

When it kicks down, does it pull like normal until it hits the limiter or does it just neutral out and hit the limiter without accelerating?

Does it make a difference from cold to hot?

Hopefully you have an electronics issue. Be careful because an electronic issue can quickly cause a mechanical failure.

Typically the two standard mods to these transmissions are a "type F" racing fluid such as Redline "racing", Amsoil "super shift", or just a cheap type f at any auto parts store. The other is replacing the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches every two years. Doing these two things will almost guarantee your trans will outlast the rest of the car. Without these two things, they seem to fail pretty often. I doubt either of these things will help your particular problem but they would be a good idea once you get the other issues straightened out.

One last thing, you can always reset the ECU. It probably won't do anything but it's quick and free.

Thx for the advice, gives me a place to start now. I dont loose any acceleration when it hits the rev limiter ,but doesnt go any faster either and it doesnt make a difference between cold or hot. it will do first thing in morning (5:45am), thats if I do a hard acceleration. how do knew if the tranny fluid needs to be changed?

The preference around here is to get the Honda Fluid out ASAP. So it's not a matter of "needing" to be changed for most people.
