PCM destroyed

Has anyone else had his happen? A month ago my car was acting funny then died, took it to the dealer and they said the PCM was full of water, apparently if the AC condenser drain line is clogged it overflows to where the PCM is. Why isn't the PCM waterproofed? cost way too much to fix I wanna complain to Acura.

What did they quote you?

Was the PCM the only thing destroyed? Any damage to the engine electronics?

What was clogging the A/C drain?

I do my own oil changes and I like to use my air compressor & blow gun to make sure the A/C drain hose is clear.

There are several threads on this.
Do you know why/how the drain tube was clogged?

One of the not-uncommon reasons for this happening is when a "tech" sticks a bolt or plug in the drain tube (to stop condensation from dripping down on him/her while performing a service like an oil change), then forgets to remove the bolt/plug afterwards. This seems to occur more often with quick-oil change places.

Water in the PCM can also occur from plugged/disconnected sunroof drains, FWIW, as well as a bad windshield install.

G/L.

Thanks guys, tried searching, I'll do better next time. there was tree stuff in the AC drain. I will remember to check the drain line when I do oil changes. 3 coil packs were melted to the block as well

does anyone have a picture of where the ac drain valves are located? I noticed when I have my AC running for over 15 minutes straight I never see a drop of water under my car and that leads me to believe it may be clogged.

I do state inspections and on some cars I leave the AC running for 10 minutes straight and there's a small puddle under the car. It even leaves a dripping trail as I drive to park it. My TL doesn't leave a single droplet. This isn't normal, is it?

Not normal at all.

My TL looks like its been peeing every time it's parked after the A/C has been on for a few minutes-- there's usually a 6-inch wide puddle of water if the ground is level.

The drain is a little tube opening which exits the firewall on the passenger side of the car at a point below and just in front of the glove compartment.

There have been a couple of threads here where each of those was mentioned, in addition to the A/C tube issue.

Thanks I'll try to look into it more.

Will, got a link to any of those threads? Just asking for my own research/education.

IIRC, that was mere speculation by someone, not factual. I don't really see how the moonroof drain tube could contribute to this. IIRC, it drains down to the left driver's side kick panel and doesn't come near the ECM/PCM.

And theoretically, a leaky windshield could lead to this, but IMO, that is an extreme long shot. It would have to leak in just the right spot and the water would have to wind it's way under the dash to just the right spot to land on top of the ECM/PCM.

There have been many cases of the leaking windshield causing problems starting years ago. For a while it seemed like there was a new post every couple months. Heavy rain, windshield replaced, car is "freaking out". The cause was usually a wet ECU.

With regard to the sunroof drains, see https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...+sunroof+drain.
There was another thread that didn't come up which mentioned at least one drain tube from the sunroof separated within the channel, leading to water dripping onto the ECU.

That's enough searching by me on a Sunday morning; I'm going back to Ramblings and the Lewd & Nude subforum now.

Got a link? I remember a few case of where the windshield not being sealed properly near the A-pillar led to the MICU getting wet. Don't recall any cases where a windshield leak led to water in the ECM, could be wrong though. Again, would love to see a link...

Again, don't see anything definitive:

And someone explain how clogged sunroof drain channels can lead to water in the ECM?

I think it was the MICU more often than not.
