I had a relay go bad on the Seat Heater on the Driver's side. It cost less than $50 to fix. It would drain mine overnight.

 

The battery has been draining overnight for the last 6 months on my 05 TL. Unfortunately I am out of warranty so my quick fix was to buy a $25 battery charger that would keep it charged when the car is parked inside my garage. Thanks to this thread, I know now that I have to disconnect the Hands Free Link module to fix the problem.

 

I had the similar issue. I found that my HFL wasn't shutting off properly. If I didn't drive my car for 2 days my battery would die. I have a 06 TL with Nav

 

Acura should honor the repair and parts cost for replacing the defective HFLs even if cars are out of warranty. So many people are having the same problem. It smells of class action lawsuit.

 

Good luck with that. There are a few, not "so many". They have a TSB and honor the warranty, beyond that there is no legal obligation to have lifetime free repairs.

 

I had the bluetooth drawing power from my car when its off and killing the battery if that helps 06 5AT

 

So can you just disconnect it? Or do you have to replace it? I rarely use mine so i wouldn't mind not having it.

 

I believe other AZers have simply disconnected the HFL unit. Do a quick search here on AZ.

 

Not necessarily! Maybe they didn't cut corners then or something to do with the climate maybe... but I also have an 05 with Nav on original battery... and the most shocking part of it all is my kids are constantly leaving the interior lights on. If I park in the daylight I don't notice it, one time they were even on for 2 days straight. Car still turned right on!!

Now, I know by saying this it will probably die today, but even if it did I wouldn't even be mad, i am so shocked that it's still going LOL

 

Sorry but I think you are incorrect about this being jus a normal issue...there is definitly something wrong with the HFL that drains the battery. If you search HFL or the part num for an 07, 39770-SEP-A12ZC, you will see the issue is very pervasive. And one guy even found a capacitor that was not sized correctly for this application, and replaced for less than $10.

I have; 07 TL with 55K and 3 different AM batteries installed in the last 3 years, each one higher quality and cranking power before I found the problem...HFL stuck on booting up in computer.

15 minute fix... to unplug $0, to replace $205...

 

New member, just throwing in my two cents.... My 2008 TL battery would drain after not being driven for four or five days. As long as it got driven frequently, everything was ok. I also had to reset my HFL every time I recharged the battery, then the HFL quit completely. I disconnected it and have had no problems since.

Easy job. I You Tubed it and found several videos. Still have to buy a new HFL, but plan on installing it myself. I have found them as low as $203.00 on Ebay.

 

Just wanted to say thanks - my battery was flat on Christmas eve and this thread gave me some reassurance. I'd taken the battery (2.5 years old) back to the shop as it was under warranty, but they charged and tested it to find it was ok. I'm guessing it was the HFL as I couldn't spot any lights left on etc that would have drained the battery.

 

I got new battery from Costco in Acura TL 2006 in october. it was working fine for couple of months initially but as winter gets more colder in December and January. It starts giving me problem and it gets drained out every morning. so annoying....

 

I bought my 05 TL last March, battery was good until around November. I bought a new one in December and it died a month later? Is there anything that can be causing this problem?

I did what most did here and try to activate the HFL. My result was that it was stuck in "booting" mode forever. So I assume that is my issue?

 

Yea most likely. Lucky, it's very easy to disconnect. The bad thing is replacing it is around $200 or more depending on the year of the car.

There's many other threads about this, but if you follow this video you'll be able to unplug the HFL in no time:


In the video it shows him prying off the map light unit first... It's actually a bit easier to pry off the cover for the moonroof switch, disconnect it, and then pull down in the hole to remove the map light cover. Hope that works.

I am having the same issue in my 07 base navi... does anyone know if this is an issue in the 07-08 or just the 04-06?

I'm thinking its an issue on 07-08 too from what I remember reading. Search for the thread called "Bluetooth fail" and you'll see 1000 people with the same problem. All you have to do is check to see if your Bluetooth and voice commands work. If it stays on "booting up" and won't connect then it's your HFL.

 

Good to know. I dont use my Bluetooth so maybe what I will do is take a reading of the draw off of the battery before I disconnect it and then after. If this is the fix that would be awesome!

 

Just an update:
I charged my battery to full and then put it back in the car and pulled the HFL and let it sit for 24 hours. Car fired right up! It was draining after 12 hours or less. I dont use my HFL so Ill just keep it disconnected.

Update:

The car has started right up for me the past 3 weeks even after sitting for a week while I was out of town... Now I parked the car for 3 days and its deader then dead again! I am 2 seconds away from burning this pile of crap car to the ground! Needless to say its at the Acura dealer because I'm sick of it!

But in all seriousness I'm surprise that checking the draw on the battery was not mentioned in this thread at all!

Connect a multimeter in series with the battery:


with the car off, doors and everything locked and after 10 minutes (of locking the car) the battery draw should be around 20-30 mA (milliamperes). If it's any higher than that you have a parasitic draw on the battery!

Remove the fuse for HFL and repeat and see if the the amerage drops after 10 minutes of locking the car. If it does than the problem is with the HFL system. If removing the fuse for HFL doesn't help, remove the fuses and replace them noting the drop one by one to find the problem area of the car that is drawing the extra current!

 

I did test the draw on the battery and before unhooking the HFL I had 200mA, after the multi meter read OL (Out of Limit). I took that as the issue was fixed.

After charging me 100.00 the Acura dealer came back with "your car is fine, we couldn't find an issue". The car has a 60mA draw at all time turned off which the dealer says is normal. They even went on to the lot and showed me another 08 TL that had the same draw.

1. I wish i could do absolutely nothing and get paid 100.00 for doing it. 2. The issue has gone away again. So frustrating.

But on a good note, I am selling the car so I wont have to deal with it anymore!

 

You found out the issue was the HFL, but you still took it to the Acura dealer to get looked at? Now you're selling the car because you don't want to replace the HFL? Please tell me I'm reading this wrong.

I thought I found the issue because when I pulled it out the drain dropped to OL but if the car sits for longer then 3-4 days it still dies. The dealer said there is nothing wrong with the car.

And the real reason I am sell it is because I got a company car and my Fiance wants a new MDX. Sell her Mazda 6 and my TL and get the MDX... And maybe a Cayman for me! :-)

 

My dead battery issue was due to a faulty HFL unit. I replaced the 220uF cap as mentioned in another post, and it's been working fine since. Before I replaced the cap, the HFL system just kept "booting up" when the unit is turned on.
It's a $1 fix. You can buy a low profile capacitor at Radioshark. It doesn't have to be a surface mount. I used a 220uF 35V cap.

 

What do you mean you replaced the "220uF cap"? Do you have a link to this? Id be interested so before I sell the car I don't have to buy a new HFL.

 

I'm going thru these same issues that many have explained. I have an 06 TL and I've had the battery replaced about 3 times and recently replaced the alternator(I should have read this thread 1st). Now I will go and disconnect the HFL.

 

Anyone know how much current a properly functioning 05 TL should draw while sitting?

 

I disconnected the HFL in May, and now I'm still having the same issues.

generally speaking if you have an intermittent 10V reading you got a bad cell, replace battery.

 

After 10 minutes of the car being off, all doors closed and locked (hood & Trunk) it should be under 30mA.

 

HFL failed and was very warm upon removal. Yep, battery wasn't doing too well either. It was drawing some decent current for sure. Got rid of it for now.

 

yeah i had this problem as well..got the battery checked and now riding with a new one. all good now
