Outside Mirrors failing

I read the prior posts on the subject but I am trying to better understand why the dealership would consider my exterior mirror glass which has become discolored and obscured to be a "wear and tear" item? I have an extended warranty and the dealership is telling me that it is not covered. Seems odd, huh?

As I also have the warranty and it was presented as a bumper to bumper warranty until 100K, I agree that it should not be a wear and tear item. Having said that I took a look at the Acura Care contract:

Parts:
All vehicle parts are covered by this CONTRACT, subject to the terms and conditions herein EXCEPT AS EXCLUDED BY ARTICLE IV. Repairs and replacements will be made with new or remanufactured genuine ACURA or AMERICAN HONDA authorized parts of like kind and quality.

IV. What is not covered:
A million items, but one is mirror glass. That in itself leaves the door wide open for Acura. I would agree if the glass were to be cracked it would not be covered, but that's not the case here as the solution has made contact and bled through the mirror. I'd call Acura direct to get their interpretation. If it’s not covered, I certainly wouldn’t be too happy.

The mirror actually changes color and becomes darker as the solution inside the mirror housing impregnates the mirror.

My mirror looked like it was rusting from the inside out or bleeding on the inside. Anyways I just replaced the glass it only cost like $30.

I'll try to find my old ones that got the rusted look and take a picture of it tonight.
I have the extended 100K warranty too
I went to one Acura dealer, they told me - never heard about that problem before, will have to charge you...
Called 2nd dealer, basically the same story.
So I ordered both mirrors and replaced myself. It was around $55 shipped for both.

I had some 'rust bubbles' in my mirror and it was replaced under warranty. I believe our mirrors do have a sort of electrochromatic coating to reduce glare; but they're not auto dimming like the inside mirror. Maybe it's water or something getting under the coating ?

It might have to do something with heating the mirrors and maybe salty conditions during winter times, too ? I think so, couse mine went brown through winter. They were fine before and brown after.
Maybe some Acuraziners from CA, FL, TX can tell us if they have the same problem ?

If the warranty does not cover it, might as well upgrade...

CA here and like I mentioned above I had the same problem. Not sure what causes it, I think the mirrors are just crappy. I bet they all will do it eventually.

Not a Salt issue...

My '04 came from TX and I drive it in AR, now. Not much salt around here. My Passenger mirror has a small brown spot in the corner since before I got it, and it hasn't gotten any bigger. I've put >25K miles on it since then. Maybe it was some kind of cleaning solution? Kinda like cleaning tinted windows with the wrong stuff?? Anyway, can you replace just the glass??

Delamination of the glass from the mirror film, and then you get water up in it, causing the metallic film to rust

Just the glass ? no... what you get from dealer is a glass on one side (on my picture above), the other side has mounting to the mirror actuator and contacts for the heater. As far as I know you cannot get just the glass... well if you have connections in factory where they make those...

Happy Ending

I stopped in to the dealership today for the replacement of my mirrors. The dealership kindly replaced my discolored mirrors as a goodwill gesture. Clearly under the terms of the Acura Extended warranty, they could have declined the coverage. I was pleased with the outcome. Thanks to all who participated in this discussion.
