Oil Filter Question - 07 TL-S

Just a quick question.

I picked up a mobil 1 oil filter from autozone and took it to my shop (no not the dealer, i'm not stupid lol) as I usually do and had them do my oil change. It seems the oil filter was too small (I usually use the K&N Filter from Autozone) and they just put on of their generic filters on for the time being. I'm going to autozone and get the correct filter.

My question is simple: Can I just take off the generic filter and install the replacement one, without having to go through the whole oil change process. Is there a specific procedure I should follow in order to do this? Should I add any oil once the new filter is done? When changing oil I've never experienced this problem so I'm just looking for some assistance.

Thanks!

Spin off the generic, fill the new filter with oil and slap it on. No biggie.

I used to be a Fram fan, but apparently they're now crap. Any recommendations?

I personally like either the honda filters or the K&N. How much oil should I pour into the filter?

Check this thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/ramblings-12/franchise-hits-game-winner-159480/

Evader - IIRC, the Mobil1 Filters are M1-104 and M1-110. One is the "old" spec and one is the "new" spec.

After reading the above thread (and others), I went with the S2000 Honda Filters xxxxx-PCX-004. Nearly identical to stock TL-S size (about 1/8" greater OD) and still made by Filtech to the orginal Toyo Roki specs.

Thanks Bearcat! I'm confused though bc the filter Autozone gave me was the M1-110.. I'm not sure why my shop guy said it wouldn't fit and was "too short".. Maybe because the mobil one was actually a little short than the K&N but I don't think that should matter as long as the threads are the same and it screws on just fine... Am I wrong in assuming this though?

I'm not an Oil Filter Expert by any means. I went through several searches and threads here after learning the Honda Spec for the TL-S changed from a Filtech/Toyo Roki Filter to a Fram Filter.

There are differences besides threading. Size, Flow Rates, Bypass Pressure, etc.

In the thread I linked above, I think darksom1 found some measurements for size. The K&N (IIRC) was definetly larger.

The "old" Honda Spec for the TL-S (xxxxx-PLM-A01 Filtech/Toyo Roki) was larger than the "new" Honda Spec (xxxxx-PLM-A02).

As far as I can understand when Acura/Honda Spec'd the A01, Mobile Spec'd the larger filter (M1-104). When Acura/Honda changed spec to the A02, Mobile changed their reference as well (to M1-110).

(I don't remember which Mobil1 Filter is which for sure. From the other threads, the M1-104 is the larger filter.)

All of this Spec changing crap is why I went out and bought 6 S2000 15400-PCX-004 Filters. They should last me almost 3 years. Just had the dealer install the 1st one (2nd oil change at ~9500 miles). Even they admitted that they didn't like the A02 and it was inferior to the A01 and S2000 filter.

I wish 6 oil filters would last me 3 years lol. I'll swing by my dealer and get one of the S2000 Filters. I assume only a honda dealer would have these and not an acura dealer?

When you spin off the old filter, it will be full of oil. So, fill up the new filter with as much fresh oil as it will take. Keep in mind that when you initially fill up the new filter, the media will soak it up like a sponge. Come back a minute later and it will look empty. Fill it again, let it soak, then fill it again, etc. until the media is saturated. Then spin it on.

If you don't do this, the engine will be starved of oil upon initial start-up because it first has to fill up the filter before the flow of oil continues to the rest of the engine. Note that if you don't do this it will NOT cause instant engine damage. However, I always like to minimize the amount of time the heads are without oil.

Finally: PLACE A COATING OF OIL ON THE GASKET!!!!! This ensures a tight seal between the block and filter. PM me with any other questions.

Looks like everything has been covered. Does anyone have any suggestions to add?

Thanks for the swift help guys!

Yep. Honda.

Your M1-110 will fit and is spec'd for the car. Build quality should be good - better than the Fram POS. It's just smaller than the *original* TL/TL-S Spec.

3 years includes the factory filter (1), plus 1st Oil Change (1), plus the S2000 filters (6).

So, assuming ~36,000 miles, that's a filter every 4,500 miles which is right where the MID is running so far.

I know you do more miles than I do though (A LOT MORE, iirc).

Stupid Question??

I saw that most of you are using the S2000 filter on the 04-08 TL. Will it also fit the TL Type-S? I know they are basically the same engine with a larger bore and stroke (thus larger displacement). Is there anyone out there with a TL-S that is currently using the S2000 filter? If so, you are getting the filter from Honda? And I'd imagine all years of S2000 take the same filter? Thanks, and sorry if I'm beating a dead horse

Alot of TL users on the S2K fiter? I don't know about that; some, yes.

I havve the 2007 TL-S and put the S2K filter (15400-PCX-004) in on the last oi change. Works fine as far as I can tell.

Search "PCX-004" and you'll find several post's I've made in this regard.

IIRC, all Honda filters have the same "fit". It's more a question of getting the Honda fiter with the appropriate size, flow, filtration, etc.

Got mine from HandA; ~$45 shipped for 6 of them.
