Noob has questions about control arms

Hi everyone,

Been lurking for a while. I bought a 2004 6m a couple months ago and it's starting to shake at highway speeds. Plus I'm getting new tires soon and want to get an alignment so i need to replace my control arms. I have a couple of questions for you guys though.

1. Should i replace the rear along with the front or can i just do the fronts? Money is an issue right now.

2. Am i supposed to swap out both upper and lower control arms? If not necessary, then how can i determine which ones need to be replaced? Again, I'm down to save as much i can.

3. I've searched through this forum, Google, and youtube, and i can't seem to find a diy for this project. I found a video on youtube documenting the steps to change the uppers on a 1g tsx, would that be sufficient? Or better yet, if anyone has a link to the diy for the 3g tl, that would be great.

Thanks for any response!
Have a great weekend all.

If money is tight, I'd make certain that the control arms are the cause of the shake
and need to be replaced. Shaking can be as simple as tire imbalance, so first do
a thorough inspection for any worn suspension components, uneven tire wear front
and rear.

What does getting an alignment have to do with needing to replace the control arms? As Turbo said, rule out tires, bent wheel, out of balance wheel/s first.

Don't just assume this is a control arm issue. Imagine replacing the control arms only to find out they aren't the cause?
You need to check all the things mentioned above first. Remember what you get when you break up the word assume in to three words.

Alignment after new tires is always a great idea. Look at the way the current tires have worn across the tread and you can get an idea if the alignment is good or not.

Shake at highway speeds is caused by a tire/rim imbalance and a cheap wheel balancing should fix the issue. Since you are getting new tires they should be balanced and the issue resolved once you change them!

Before you get your new tires and alignment, inspect the LOWER CONTROL ARM BUSHING! There is a 10+ Thread page here with tons of pictures. Make sure its not torn! If it is, replace it ($30 per side) so that way you don't have to replace the entire control arm! A honda specialist should be able to swap the bushings for about 1.5hr of labor per side.
