Need Advice Quick: Timing Belt Service
Hey Guys need some quick advice. Timing Belt Service.
1) At how many miles is it a good idea to get replaced?
2) Dealer price experience anyone ?
3) Read below and let me know if its a good deal cause it sounds to good to be true to me ....
At the dealership this morning for an oil change service rep. takes me inside the service area and shows me a slight leak due to oil pump seal. He says its not gushing but highly recommends that I should get it. Estimates $900 to a $1000 and says its a good idea that I also do the timing belt at the same time as that should save money as we are going to move the motor anyway. I confirm with him that it is engine related and he says yes. At that instant moment I inform him that car is under certified pre-owned warranty
so fix it
Obviously surprised, he checks at the paperwork and agrees and tells me that its a day worth of job and I should still get the timing belt done as they are going to move the motor anyway. His idea was that it should save me labor hours incase I plan to get it done anyway as I plan to keep the car for a gazillion miles
He offered that he would only charge labor for the extra hour or hour half spent on the timing belt and it shouldn't be more than $150 bucks. To be honest, I did like his idea as timing belt service does cost a lot for cars but i still told him that sure let me think about it.
10 minutes later he comes up to me and tell me that as a loyal customer just pay for the part which is around $50 and he will not charge the labor at all.
I had previously inquired about transmission fluid flush which was quoted $90 like 3 months ago and he told me that as you will have to drop the car off for a day or 2 ... we will get the warranty work done for the oil pump seal, change the timing belt and flush the tranny fluid all between $150 to $200. Oh and RLX as a loaner too
Sounds too good to be true .... but its desperate times and a lot of these dealers are aggressively competing against each other so what do you guys think ?

Even if it was something like $200 extra for replacing the parts as above, I'd jump on it. As long as they're that far into the car, make sure your motor mounts are good and they replace the drive belt tensioner. If you get all that stuff done while they're that deep in, it'll be like getting a new car and you're good for the next 100K.

sound like a good deal...
since this thread is already going i may as well ask here.
i just picked up a Tl at 104K and they did the 105K service, but not the timing belt.
I'm now at 106K and am looking at about $800 to do the timing belt, tensioner and water pump (all OEM parts)
What is the absolute latest that i should be doing this service? I know it's supposed to be done at 105K, but this was a 1 owner car, garaged and very, very well taken care of.
also, the dealer quoted me 1K for just the timing belt... but my buddy works there as an autobody tech, he asked his friend in the service dept what he would charge, to do it after hours/on the side. this guy said he'll do everything (timing belt, pully tensioner and water pump) for 800, including labor.
Sounds like a great deal.. just wondering if i have a little bit of time to wait and save up some extra money or do i need to dip into my savings to get i done now?
Thanks in advance!!

Hey guys. Sorry for the late update ... Been tied up at work. Anyway, I appreciate every one telling me about the waterpump and tensioner as I had no clue about those parts need to be changed as well. Now the question is that I only have 62k miles, does anyone know when does ACURA recommend the timing belt service ? 105k miles ? Also, I am pretty sure that THEY WILL charge labor for the extra parts but still no harm in asking right ? So I plan to look up the prices of these parts and then contact the service rep in regards to what he can do with pricing....
If I get it right , these are the parts that need to be changed right ?
1) Timing Belt
2) Belt Tensioner
3) Water pump
ANything else ? Please add to the list ... Thanks a million to all of you.

Oh they have been giving out RLX loaners in South Florida to regular customers who have cars close to the model level as the RLX I think ... atleast thats what the rep said .. or may be he is just hyping it up to convince me to get the service done. Regardless I am more interested in getting the car done.
Do the timing belt service with the pump, TB , and tensioner, as those parts are tough to get to and you want to do it all in one shot (this way, you're good to go for the next 100K miles). As for the drive belt (serpentine) and tensioner, you can wait on that as they are typically done with the 105K service. You can do it with your timing belt, but it's not necessary (since you're at 62,000 miles). Some will indicate that belt age is a factor as well (and they're correct in this regard), so do the drive belt and tensioner if it gives you peace of mind, but be aware it's not truly needed at this point.
Same with spark plugs- at 62,000 miles, they still have plenty of life left. Don't forget, you're doing the TB since they're deep into the motor anyway, but you don't yet really need this work done.
By the way, there is no actual time interval for the belt (although many here say 105K miles or 7 years). I have a Honda motorcycle and on that, the TB is to be replaced at 90,000 miles without a time interval. With the TL, you wait until the MID indicates the '4' service showing the TB is at a mileage when it should be changed.

TL, TSX, ILX, MDX, RDX, I have driven them all. I really like the 3rd gen TL and TSX (before the big beak)
Guys a quick question . Should I also be replacing the Timing Belt Adjuster ? Or only the tensioner ? Also, the pulleys look well in to the cam shaft ... even thought they are 2 seperate under $15 parts, I don't think Acura would foot the labor bill to get that much into it.
at 62k I'd just let it go. I just did our car at 125,000 and the timing belt looked absolutely brand new. The serpentine belt, thats another story. Anybody wanna throw me 800 Ill do the waterpump, tbelt, tensioner, pulleys, lol
