Unhappy Major Problems with my 04 Tl

Good Afternoon to everyone,

My tl seems to be dead, Driving on the highway my car started not to respond to full throttle. about an hour later i stepped on it and it stalled completly would not start. So i towed it to my mechanic two days later the car starts now the car would not go over 3,000 rpm's my mechanic thinks ot might be the timming belt moved over it does not move when i floor it the cars has about 76k I drive my car really hard. I need some help here. The check engine light turned off after the battery died. Also when I turn the a/c on the car goes down to 500 rpm's and shakes, it started to do this 3 days before I had problems

Thanks in advance

Might want to check throttle / gas pedal sensors.. Toyotas w/ drive by wire will go into "limp" mode when a problem is detected in the drive by wire system and I think the system limits the engine to 1800 RPM.. maybe your car is doing the same thing.

If there is a bad sensor and the engine is running low, then putting a load on it (a/c) may cause it to idle even lower.

So the check engine light is off and will not come back on now?

lol.. theres no "safe" mod for cars...

as for the 500rpm.... thats idling low.. could be many things, first thing i think of is a plug.

car not moving when you press the gas?? elaborate please.... does the engine rev, to what RPM, etc,etc.... usually, when a car doesnt "move" we think transmission problems....

good luck..

p.s. go to acura. they know their shit the best. i have my mechanics, but when it comes to big important things, you are better off safe @ acura

there is a safe mode for cars.. like what i described above; if the vehicle detects a problem with it's drive by wire system it limits engine speed.... it's not like pressing F8 on a computer or anything but it is a safe operating mode... (though driving 10 mph may not be safe on the road..)

Timmah's correct. The car will go into "limp mode" to preserve itself if it senses certain anomolies in the numerous sensor arrays. What the OP describes in the opening thread is almost a perfect example of what your car going into limp mode feels like.

As for the OP's question, just becasue the CEL isn't on doesn't mean there isn't a code stored in the ECU. The flag that triggered the original CEL will be stored as an "intermittent fault", which wil likely lead you to the source of the problem.

Can you tell I used to drive a VW?

lol. if you had an 07+ i think the Acura link will tell you whats wrong with the car!! lol

could very well also be somethign to do with engine management (ECU) or on O2 sensor... but, i am not a mechanic... the guys @ acura are.

I drive a 2006... which is virtually the same car. 07+ have a later version of navigation, a DVD player that plays mp3, and a BT module that will pull contacts from "certain - Sony Ericcson almost exclusively" phones... that's about it... ain't nothin special or different about the 07+.

AcuraLink is Acura's marketing speak for an integrated Nav, Bluetooth, and handfree system... Just like all of us have from 2004 on (if you elected Nav). AcuraLink will not read out trouble engine diagnostic codes... and should not be confused with the ONStar feature that does do exactly that.

I'm not a mechanic either... but I'm savvy enough, and been around this stuff to know what's up.

- Something with the ECU... Um yeah. It's just that, an ECU that processes numerous signals from the sensors. There's a fialied sensor somewhere... and it must be a serious one, enough to send the engine into limp mode.

- O2 sensor it's not. Those fail all the time, and will creat CEL, but never send the engine into limp mode.

Careful attention has to be paid to when to trigger limp in the ECU SW programming. The safety issue of limp mode while driving vs the safety issue of catastrophic engine failure must be weighed. Minor exhaust issues are not one of those.

I stand corrected, Acuralink will display a limited set of trouble codes and convey those to the nearest dealer... That's pretty neat...
