Its fine on start up most times but then will start flashing in and out then just go out completely...loose connection maybe? When I smack the top of the dash it usually comes back fine.

How can I get to the wiring? Will I have to pull the whole deck and everything?

Easiest way is to pry up on the silver strips starting at the rear. Use a butter knife with a towel around it. Once that's up, you can reach the edges of the assembly for the clock. It pulls straight out and you may need some force to pull it out. There's 1-2 connectors on it that could be loose.
