Knocking noise on front wheel when cold

I have a 2007 TL and recently when the temperature gets cold say under 0 Celsius or 32 F when I turn to my left a knocking sound comes out from the passenger front wheel after the car gets warmer it stops. Also int he summer it does not do this noise... I read a thread last winter of something similar but did not read any more info on that. Does anyone had or is having this problem?

yea I have this issue when I turn both ways. haven't fixed it for 2 years now but I might take a look at it this summer. It doesn't affect my driving at all, and I can't hear it in summer or when the car warms up.

I think that in some threads I have read that it's the axles or CV boot but not sure 100%

I just had mine checked out for this and they had to replace the left axel. I don't know how long our axels last but I bought my car around 37,000 miles and had to get a CV boot changed and a new axel and now i'm at 60,000 and just had to replace the left axel again.

take it to the dealer to check out if you are under warranty...mine was doing the same thing, so i had my passenger cv axle replaced, but that did not fix the problem and the noise is still there...it kind of sounds like popcorn when you are turning or accelerating from a complete stop....very annoying and unfortunately i am out of warranty now so i have to figure out what else it could be. more than likely it could be

I have the exact same issue. 2005 TL, 52,000 miles. I'm out of warranty so I'm delaying taking it in. It's been happening for a couple of years. It seems to have gotten much louder this year though.

Are you an aggresive driver? Axels shouldn't be failing like this.

No I am not an aggressive driver, I took an appointment to the dealer. I would have to leave it overnight because once the car heats up the noise stops.
For the quote above ..Yes it sounds like popcorn popping when I turn the wheel. I will keep you posted on the on going.

Previous post it is the o-ring which cost less than 1.00. There is a DIY guide on that. If it happens when you turn the wheel it could be power stearing issue. Which I think is a recall.

had this issue. started two winters ago. cold car...click click click. once warm no more noise. the grease in the axle warms up and is lubricating what its suppose to lubricate. that was at about 40K. summer came. no clicks. winter came back and click click click. car warmed up no click. bad outer CV jt. had other issues vibration in steering wheel (the other axle-inner CV jt). this was all fixed at 50K on the car this past november. no more clicks. no more vibrations. replaced with oEM under coverage from my car insurance.

your issue sounds like a bad CV jt. replace the axle. hope this helps.

I have the same sound coming from the front of my TL also. It's been happening the last couple winters when the temperatures get low! Would best describe the sound as a creaking/popcorn popping sound.

Any news on what the problem is?

axles or joints or something. Unless checked out by a mechanic no one knows for sure.

Have noticed this on my 05 the last few days up in Toronto. It's been cold and messy on the roads the last couple weeks, perfectly clean up until now. Happens for about 20 mins until the car is warmed up. Only hear it under acceleration, louder when turning right, less loud when turning left. Coming from drivers side. 74k miles on my car.

I wonder if you could swap out the grease in the outer cv joint with a different grease for those of us that the boots are fine?

I have this same creaking noise first heard it when winter hit and it got cold. It only creaks when I make a left turn and the sound comes from the passenger side wheel area but as mentioned in this forum the noise dies down as the car warms up. Worth taking in? new lubricant? wait until the snow melts for the sound to go away? how much to replace an axle/joint not considering insurance?

I finally got a test drive with the dealer and they said it happens on the TL because of the rubber that protects the axle with the CV joints...the rubber cracks and then in cold weather the greases freezes up or it gets so cold that it does not lubricate properly and thus creates a knocking noise, but once it heats up the knocking stops. So to stop this noise change of the CV joint. If the noise persists then the axle has to go to.

I didn't notice the rubber being cracked on mine. Guess I'll have to take another look. How about they use some grease that doesn't freeze up. I've never had this issue with other vehicles.

Ok, I went and get the TL fixed and they changed the Right front side shaft assembly and the knocking noise went away... the dealer said that they had a few replacements on the 07 TL.

I am having the exact problem with my 06. Creaking/popping when the car is cold. My dealer is 40 minutes away so I left my car there overnight and drove it with the tech the next morning but the noise was not heard and I felt frustrated. I should have taken it in during December or January because the noise is noticable when it's about 0-10 F outside and with the spring coming up, my car will not see that temperature again until next winter and my car will be out of warranty then.

If it's just the issue with the grease, then I can live with it. I hope it isn't one of those things that will break on me and the car won't move and cost me a lot to get it fixed.

HI, They said it was a grase problem but they went and change CV joint and shaft assembly, and that stopped the noise. You should go back and tell them to pput in file and then when it gets colder and it happens you might be at least protected and can argue your case. Yes it is annoying.

my started to click the previous winter, then went away. fall/winter came back, so did the click. so you can drive it, it'll only get worse. just keep an eye out on it and mindful of new noises. i swapped mine out as i may have mentioned earlier. its fine now. for warranty issues...have the dealer make a notation in your file and that should cover you. both my axles went bad just after 40K, swapped out at 50K.
