Interior lighting current draw- need schematics

Hi All,

I've woken up to a dead battery the past two mornings. I've determined that I have a 0.2A current draw with everything off that stems from the interior lighting fuse (position #5 of the interior fuse panel located behind the driver's kick panel). Nothing weird going on with the lights except that all the lights for the power windows in the driver's arm rest are out. All other lights appear to be operating.

I have a base line of 0.061A (61mA) to 0.069 (69mA) with no fuses installed in EITHER panel. I think this is an acceptable draw. Do you guys? 0.2A (200mA) from the interior lighting fuse alone is not acceptable and I'm sure it's what has been killing the battery.

I need to find the schematics for all the associated wiring coming off that fuse. Anybody got it? I'm gonna head to dealership tomorrow and request some schematics, but I know they don't usually hand them out. Any help is appreciated! Tyson

It might be the Hands-Free Link unit not going to sleep! Be sure you are waiting at least 10 minutes after shutting off the car and as well with the car alarm armed (all doors closed including hood and trunk).

IT should be around 20 milliamps, 200 if the HFL is active.

Are you sure you didn't misread the fuse # because #5 is for the amp and audio unit:

Also, there is a TSB to replace the HFL units on certain models because it was causing a parasitic drain...If the fuse you measured the drain on is really #6, then that fits with the HFL unit being faulty...

You are correct. It is #6, I was mistaken. I wrote the post from memory a few hours after I did it.

Is the TSB something Acura will do? Sounds like a pretty likely culprit. I sure am appreciative to have a forum like this to get some help.

What year is your TL? The TSB is B05-29 and it covers 2005 TLs with Navigation – From VIN 19UUA6...5A000001 thru 2005 TL w/Navigation 19UUA6...5A030286.

If your car falls in that range, just take it in to the dealer and they should fix it. If they give you a hassle about being out of warranty, ask them to go to the district manager for goodwill coverage.

There is a sticky link in the Problems forum. Click on that and then click on the link to TSBs. It will give you a list of the TSBs, however, the last I knew the Mods are still working on getting the individual TSB links to work. (Honda is denying access to the TSB starting about a month ago).

I tried searching through those links and none of them are working at present.

Unfortunately, I have an 06.

I'd still give it a shot at the dealer. Try the TSB first and then if that doesn't work, tell them it's a well known fact that many of the older TL (04-06) HFL units had this problem (this is true).

Last resort, I believe I've read that pulling and resetting a certain fuse (don't remember if it was #6 or not) will reset the HFL and cause it to behave normally. I'll see if I can find the thread...

PS. There is another Acura forum that has the pdf of this TSB. Not sure if I can name it, so I'll just say to Google "B05-029.pdf" and it will be the 7th major link down.

Last resort, the part is about $450 new and is extremely easy to replace yourself (overhead console between mirror and dome lights).

Part # is 39770-SEP-A02ZA

Thanks for all the great info! I'll try the dealer tomorrow. If it's a no go there, I'm gonna try to isolate it (remove the connector to the unit) and prove that is exactly where the draw is coming from. I'm also gonna get an analog meter from work for a more accurate reading. My digital Fluke is awesome, but sometimes the old ones work best. Especially for precise current measurements. I'll post back with any developments. Thanks again!!! Seriously. I wire aircraft for a living, so I would have eventually arrived at a conclusion, but man it's great to have this community!!! You may have just saved me hours of troubleshooting!

Good luck with the dealer. Go in there with a pleasant but firm attitude. Be sure you let them know you are well aware that the TL HFL units are flaky. I would even mention Azine and that it's all over the forum about how crappy these units are.

Read this thread, especially post #38 with a link to another HFL TSB. Many people have used this TSB to get the units replaced on 04-06 TLs. You may want to take the approach that your unit is not recognizing voice commands...

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/replace-bluetooth-module-791817/

Note step 2 of the TSB refers to a 200mA draw caused by faulty units...BINGO!!

If that all fails, you might be in some luck. Take a look at this thread, especially post #7:

https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/bluetooth-fails-792642/

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

One more thing. After you shut off and lock your car, does your cell phone move at least 30 ft away from the car? Some people with garages that open into the kitchen or office had a problem with their cell phone's bluetooth never disconnecting because they would just set their cell phone on the desk/kitchen counter which was still within bluetooth range of the car...
