Inconsistent Clutch Pedal

Hi :

I have a 2004 TL, 6 speed manual.

After a few quick shifts, my clutch pedal travel decreases to only a few inches, and becomes much harder to depress.

After pumping the clutch pedal a few times, or waiting a period of time, the travel, and effort required to depress the clutch return to normal.

Has anyone seen this before, and have any suggestion as to the fix ?

Suspect either my master or slave is failing, but would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have.

Thanks
mike

You should definitely flush and bleed the system to ensure there is no air/water in the system.

Have you deleted the checkvalve in the slave cylinder?

If you haven't, the clutch (friction disc & pressure plate) tends to get hot, much quicker. The symptoms you are experiencing might be caused by the self-adjusting mechanism in the OEM pressure plate; when it gets hot, it doesn't work properly.

Hi :

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

By any chance, do you have details on how to flush and bleed the system ? I've searched, but unable to find it.

How would I ensure proper function of the checkvalve in the slave cylinder ?

Thanks
mike

this stiff clutch problem is only resolved by changing the clutch.

I know because I went through EVERY possible fix, and only when I changed my clutch, the stiff pedal phenomenon went away

I have a Helms Factory Service Manual that I use to work on my own car.

Search for the check valve delete thread; it will give you more information about it.

^when i had the stiff clutch, i did the check valve delete mod to see if it would resolve my problems.

NOPE.

the only way to get rid of the stiff or sticking clutch is to change it.

^correct. the pressure plate and the self adjusting clutch make it do this.

my clutch disk had several heat scores all over the place.
