I think it's the emergency brake

Last month, I had the rear brakes changed on my car because I heard the scratching sound. I have a 2005 TL.

Tonight, I'm driving it, I hear a clunking sound from the rear driver tire area. When the mechanic was changing the pads, he noticed that the emergency brake assembly wasn't right...a washer used to hold it in place wasn't doing it's job, so he fixed it the best he could; now I think the e-brake is broken again & my warranty is over.
Instead of the e-brake assembly being round in shape, it was dimpled at the top because the washer there wasn't staying on, causing the top of the e-brake assembly to cave in, compacting the e-brake.

I have little knowledge about the terminology of the e-brake, as you can tell.

Anyone else have this problem?

you mean the retainer clip wasnt holding something in place?

Did the mechanic say it needed rear pads? or you thought it did and said to replace?
The park brake is inside the rear rotor- did you get the rotors surfaced or replaced? otherwise the guy doesnt need to remove them to see the park brake.

The person who tried to fix it needs to order the correct part and fix it right!
no respectable tech would put it together unsafely and send you off without ordering what it needs!

Pics would help us, a real mechanic who works on honda/acura is what you need!
look in the phone book for ad with honda/acura pic or name specified as what they work on.

Yeah, the retainer clip is a washer & wasn't holding the shoe in place correctly. I needed new pads, he showed them to me. He surfaced the rear rotors and saw the emergency brake when taking them off. I trust the guy...been going there for over 10 years.

He put the washer back where it was suppose to go & it stayed. I think it popped out again. Been holding for a little over a month.

I just went out in it and the grinding noise goes away & comes back.

I have the exact same issue with mine. After hearing grinding I brought it in and had it diagnosed at the dealership (without disassembly). Basically the tech said that when he took it for a ride he pulled up on the e-brake and it was useless. He said that since I don't use the e-brake much it is possible that it rusted and fell apart inside its housing.

Now that it is diagnosed I'm going to take it to a mechanic that I trust that will charge me half of the dealership price.

I know this is an old thread, but did you ever get final word on the exact problem and the fix?
