Howling noise when driving over 40mph

i seem to have a howling noise when im driving over 40mph, the noise gets louder and louder the faster i go. it sounds like it's coming from the left side of the vehicle but i can't tell if it's the front or back.

i also noticed that when i first start the car and drive off, i hear something in my wheel, sort of like a squeak on and off but it goes away.

i'm assuming i need new axles? i'm not sure, please help. thank you

Worn tires can make a howling noise... you may need new tires and an alignment. And don't forget to rotate your tires afterwards at the right intervals. Have a shop check your tires first.

You might have worn tires like I did. Mine made a terrible drone noise also. I ended up installing a rear adjustable camber kit to correct the problem. If you look at the rear of your car from about 10 or 15 feet away the rear tires will not be perpendicular to the ground. I think I am using the correct word. Anyways once you put those on then get an alignment and tell them you want the tires to be perpendicualr to the ground. I also replaced the tires at that time and have not had anymore issues with the tires wearing or drone noises. Good luck.

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me.

I thought that it was a wheel bearing also but it ended up being the camber kit that fixed mine.

Have you fixed that?

Mine is 2006 TL, manual 6 spd, base.

I typically notice every little squeak, that is kind of freak I am.
I started to notice howling noise after rotated the tires (which are pretty new). I figured out it might have been mis-aligment (after a clutch replacement few months ago). So I did the alignment and balancing.

The howling stayed. It comes on at about 2000 rpm at 40 mph and above. The faster the louder. It stays if the car is rolling on neutral at above 40mph. The pitch of the howling does not change with RPM.

To rule out the tires road noise I jacked the front up, so the front wheels were in the air. Noise stayed at > 40mph. I took off the front wheels, so to locate the noise more precisely. It was coming from the left axle from inside the tranny box, or at least it was louder in there. No wheel hubs noise as I hoped (I know that kind of noise from another car), or calipers pressing too hard.

Today I also checked the transmission fluid level, which seems a bit high. So I drained a bit (not yet drove the car to see the result).

This is driving me crazy, I am about to give up and go to a dealership.

Anyone got any ideas?
