Hood keeps closing on me

When I open the hood to my TL it will say open for a bit, but then unexpectidly it will slam closed. I'm not sure what the proper term for the support rods under the hood are. Does anyone have a remedy for my problem? I know I can purchase new supports but I would like to know if there is anything else I can do.

Purchase new hood shocks, or use something to hold it up, I guess?

Option 1 is the best. That's my recommendation.

New "hood stays," $61.99 plus shipping from Delray Acura. For some reason the left one is more expensive than the right one.

If it's extremely cold then that could be it. Either way they are on there way out. You might not need both. It' may be only one has failed.

The old work around is to clamp a vise grip on the shaft, when the hood is up, where the shiny rod enters the cylinder. Many a hatchback owner has left vise grips in the hatch on an ongoing basis rather than spend on new lifters. Most of my Saab 900's needed them

Know that clamping a vise to the shaft will eventually kill the hood lifter if it isn't really dead since you will be damaging the polished surface of the rod which will cut the seals that keep the pressurized gas within.

For a car like the TL I'd replace them. Vice grips complemented a Saab 900 but not an Acura TL.

I think TEIN makes replacement ones that "fit" our car, I believe a few members have fitted them...

Autozone may even have them. Unless you need name brand ones that are modded.

Has anyone found an aftermarket solution to replacing these gas springs? Mine are out and I'm not liking the $80 option.

Go aftermarket, Strongarm supports are fine and cheap on Rockauto.com. I did the vise grip thing on my old Buick, if the TL hood slams I'll just buy some.

these struts are like 15$ at the parts store and you really only need one to do the job typically
