Help: sometimes my car won't start.

Hi everyone,

There were no replies to my previous post, but here goes again. Hopefully I can be more succinct and clear and get some answers.

My 2006 AT base (80K kms) has been having trouble starting for the past 2 weeks. Car fails to start about 1 out of 10 times.
Lights & radio etc. all seem fine. When I turn the key, I get the relay rapid click/buzzing sound by the fuse box then a click and nothing.

Shifting gears doesn't help. Neither does swapping keys. Just random.

Checked battery (new 1 year), cables, & fuses (visually). Swapped some of the identical relays. Tried tapping the starter but that did not seem to do anything.
I replaced the ignition switch and that got rid of the relay clicking/buzzing sound (yay?) but still get the occasional non-start, though it seems like it's less frequent. Single click and silence...no start.

The previous owner had the hands-free disconnected.

My next move is to try replacing the starter with a midrange aftermarket. Someone suggested I just change the starter solenoid, but it seems like a solenoid itself is harder to find and almost the cost of a new starter and probably the same amount of work. Can anyone think of anything else to check? I'm worried that if I leave it, I will be stranded somewhere, so I'd really like to fix it.

Thank you!

Hmm, I'm in Canada so options are limited. Rebuilt Denso starts at $300. Any other recommendations? Thoughts on AC Delco?

Found a Denso on Rockauto for $250 Canadian with shipping!
That includes $110 core, though international return shipping will probably kill that.

I don't think shipping will be too bad, the starter isn't exactly a big or heavy part. Rockauto makes it easy to ship back with a shipping label you can print out.

Have you tried replacing the + battery cable? At this age it may be corroded internally where you can't see and can easily cause these types of issues.

replaced

Received Denso reman starter from Rock Auto. Replaced it in about an hour and half (could have been 30 min - see below) using only hand tools and without lifting the car. My engine bay is pretty clean so I didn’t expect too much trouble with bolts etc.

Not a lot of fun though. Worst part as many have reported was removing the battery tray. Though in my case I spent about an hour putting it back. Stripped one of the upper bolts somehow and lost another in the engine bay
