Help!! Most annoying noise!!

my tl makes a ratteling/chirping noise from right side of engine almot like a bad pulley or slipping belt. but it only does it during light to medium acceleration. it goes away for a second while the tranny shifts then comes right back, but not under hard acceleration.

it does not makethis noise if i just put the car in neutral and rev it. also the other day at work i put my car on the lift raised it a foot and had a machanic look under the hood while i went through the gears. funny thing it only made the noise for a split second wtf!!

so basically i have a noise that i cannot find because it dosent happen while reving the motor or have the car in the air..its really botheringth hell outta me..

i hope someone has had the same issue so i can resolve this problem.... thanks

More than likely its the drive belt tensioner. There still a chance that it could be another accessory but the tensioner is a common problem. You may be able to watch it and see it rattling while the car is running, at idle or higher revs.

There are 2 or 3 different TSB's for noise from that area. Look them up from the TSB link below.

Before you can access a TSB, you must follow the instructions at the top of this page:

3G TL Technical Service Bulletins (TSB'S) 3G Garage #J-016

did you try removing the serpentine belt and starting the engine? That will tell you if the noise is related to the serp belt accessories (ie. A/C, tensioner, etc). Use a screwdriver as a stethascope try to pinpoint the noise.

I had similar noise coming from the belt area and it ended up being one of the timing belt pulleys was completed destroyed....the belt was severely damaged and I was lucky it hadn't failed...

just got this fixed for $290 at the dealer

they replaced the auto tensioner and the belt. my problem started off as a cold start squeal. after a few months, it started to vibrate pretty bad when the ac was on

all good now

Did they change the tensioner pulley or the tensioner assy?

the parts it says they used on the paper work were

38920-RCA-A03 belt, compressor
31170-RCA-A04 tensioner, auto

Will try with the pulleys first and if not, then the 31170-RCA-A04 it is ;)

it only does the noise while driving it wont do it at idle or reving in neutral

I have the exact same noise. Just spend $1,500 to have the 100,000 mile service done so it's not the belts/tensioner. Broken motor mount replaced and catalytic converter heat shields were loose and fixed. Still have the noise. Mechanic said next step was take apart transmission - could be a broken tooth somewhere?

Stupid car is paid for in 3 months, I would prefer to NOT drop $3,000 on a tranny rebuild.

Got some wallet friendly lift time scheduled with a friend for Friday. Hopefully will have an update then.

rp0617 05-10-2012 04:58 PM

So i couldnt take the noise anymore so i decided to check the intermediate shaft heat shield that i read about so many ppl having Problems with so i tweaked IT a little today and tje noise is gone

westas2 05-11-2012 02:16 PM

OK - so consensus among techs was broken tooth in main gear, that's why I hear the noise in 1st, 2nd and Reverse. They said if I can stand the noise it will be fine, just annoying.

Otherwise spend the money to take the tranny apart and fix it......

rp0617 05-13-2012 06:48 PM

Mine did IT through all the gears
