jus bought an 05 tl with navi, it idles rough and the dealer thinks i'm crazy. he says thats how the sound. any suggestions

 

When does it idle "rough": in the first couple of minutes after a complete cold start (which may be normal for a ULEV car in a cold climate), or at some time after the engine has warmed up (not normal)?

What rpm range is shown on the tach when the idle seems rough?

 

rpm is 1 or whateva the 1 is to the left, i feel the idle in the steering wheel. after the car has warmed up, they pulled up another TL 06 with 15k there was a heavy idle with that one tooo. so i dunno, am i crazy? what can it be?

 

In general, I've noticed the TL's do idle rougher than many other cars, especially during cold starts. Sometimes mine is pretty rough (after warm) and makes me consider saying something to a dealer, but sometimes its fairly smooth. so i dont know what to do about it either....maybe it is just "a characteristic", but hopefully it wont lead to premature wear.

 

If your idle is 1000 RPM or slightly higher, the engine is in the cold start mode and is rougher than when the car is warmed up and idling @ 750-800 RPM-- that's due to the steps taken to decrease cold-start emissions to qualify the TL as a ULEV.

I'd be concerned with a rough idle only if the temp gauge is at normal operating temperature and the car is warmed up.

 

my friend was saying it could have something to do with the engine mounts b/c it kicks in reverse and drive.... could it be? also it maks like this grumbling noise when excellerating. i mean, am i jus not used to the 270hp or something could actually be wrong

 

Yes, your friend may be right- it can be the engine mounts, esp. if there is excessive movement engine movement (such that the car "kicks" into gear).

Engine mounts are a warranty item, and several forum members have had them replaced due to unusual roughness or engine/transmission movement.
The TL's V6 is a smooth unit even with 270 hp, so it's not the engine itself.

 

well here goes nothing, since i'm a girl and no one pays attention to chicks when it comes to things like that, i'm gonna let him take the car to acura and they can bark on each other, in the mean time i called to corperate office and complained, so they are investigating.. do these cars grumble when u excellerate... or could that be caused by bad engine mounts as well

 

My 05 TL had a pretty rough idle, and had alot of vibration through out the RPM range. Its normal for the car, the VTEC engine uses high RPM camshafts with 2 sets of lobes that allow it to even idle relatively decent.

You wont find a fix for the car ever. Acura changed the subframe in the 06 model year and the 07s and some 06s seem to be much smoother.

 

so i other words, i should've gotten an 06
