Gear shifter problem Acura TL type s 2007

So I have a problem in my Acura TL type s 2007 where I put it in d for drive and when I wanna put it back to reverse or park it won't let me unless I push down on the button beside the gear shifter. Any suggestions on what could be the problem. I also took apart the plastic pieces around it and it seems that the previous owner spilled soda and went all over the gear shifter area? Any suggestions on what I should do I would really appreciate it.

you have to take the whole center armrest console out to get inside the gear shifter area and thoroughly clean out and wipe down the area. There is a plastic white piece that slides to release the gear shifter and the syrup from the soda is making it stick. (Trust me I know as I posted pics when I had to clean it from spilling soda) The colder it gets eventually it won't move at all for minutes at a time.
