Front Wheel Bearings ?

Front Wheel Bearings ?
2004 5AT 151,000 miles
On our 3G TL's the way things are set up, would checking for play at 6 and 12
be the only reliable test to tell if the front wheel bearings are bad ?
I have too much play in the steering wheel and the car sways when driving and has a slight vibration I feel intermittently. I read online that it could very well be a bad wheel bearing.
I already know i need shocks for certain. Just not sure if shocks could be the only factor contributing to the center steering wheel play and the swaying.
My lower ball joints are good also as well as the front end links...and I've tightened the steering rack already with the special tool...so no slop in there or any play in inner/outer tie rods. Not sure what else.
any input is appreciated.....

if youre getting play at 6 & 12. Your ball joints are the problem.
when wheel bearings go bad you will hear a humming noise that increases with speed.
Check your tie rods too because that would also cause problems with keeping the car straight on the roads.

Another way to check the ball joints and tie rods is to raise your vehicle ( place that side on jack stands )
place a jack under the lower control arm and raise it to the level it would be on the ground.
Then check for play.
If you check while the wheel is hanging you really wont get any play due to the weight being pushed down on the ball joint.
