Fog Lights/HID Help
Fog Lights/HID Help
I purchased a HID fog light kit from a fellow member a couple months back.
Everything worked great for about 4-6 weeks except on one really cold night(not sure if that matters) I went to start the car and the HID fogs started to flicker and then completely went out.
The indicator light on the dash still was on but no output from the lights. I tried again the next morning, but nothing changed.
Today I got around to taking out the ballasts and changing the bulbs back to stock, hoping maybe the HID just blew, but that didn't solve anything either.
Any ideas?

i still don't see a relay harness in that picture, but glad you figured it out.
if it happens again, buy the harness and install it. the HID fogs you have draw too much power for our OEM system to handle on its own, the relay harness is used to provide power to the HID kit directly from the battery rather than through the car's factory headlight circuit.

Thanks... I'm definitely gonna buy the harness so this doesn't happen again
Do you recommend a certain one or are they all the same?

just wanted to add something about using a harness (or lack of use). I've never used one since I first put HIDs on the OEM location on my 06 TL. and I have never had a problem with HID kits blowing or having issues.
that being said, having an upgraded harness would have been good insurance.

When i installed my hid fogs using the factory harness it doesnt turn on when it havent been used for a while so i have to keep turning on and off to get it on. But when i get it on it stays on. So i got this problem fixed by running a relay to it and about 4 weeks later, now i get the same problem again. Did anyone experience this problem before or know anything about this?

also flipping the HID kit on and off repeatedly in a short amount of time will only damage your ballasts.
Umm i dont think i grounded anything, the black wire from the harness is going to the negative side of the terminal and the red is going to the positive. I also am not turning the hid on and off but i am flipping the fog light switch on and off to get the hid to come on. I just noticed that if i turned the fog light switch on and the hid are not on, if i wait a little while and don't do anything they'll come on
correct, turning on your HID fogs on and off will damage the ballasts. I believe my relay is only connected to the positive battery terminal and then grounded to the chassis. I'm also nearly certain on my relay harness is that there are an additional 2 grounds, one for each ballast at the ballast plug. I have those grounded to the factory grounding points.
edit: my harness looks like this:

see those black leads coming off of each plug for the ballast? those need to be grounded to chassis grounds. I would also check the fuse in the fuse holder just for assurance.

So the drivers side fog light went out. Passenger one still works. I assumed maybe after 5yrs the light burnt out
Ordered a pair of new lights and tried installing them today, but ran into some issues. Neither of the new lights worked on the drivers side. I went and tested them on the passenger side and both work
I then tried the driver side light(the one I thought went out) on the passenger side, but strangely that didnt work. So is it possible the drivers side light and ballast both stopped working at once? Or is it something else unrelated?
To summarize
Lights On Passenger Side Ballast
- Original Passenger Light Works
- Both New Lights Work
- Original Drivers Side Light DOES NOT WORK
Lights On Drivers Side Ballast
Nothing Works
