Flickering P Light
Flickering P Light
Hey everyone, I've done some research on this topic and I haven't been able to find anyone with a similar problem.
I have my Locks set to Unlock on park and Lock on leaving park. What I'm finding after driving is that I'll shift into park, a few seconds later the P indicator will flicker once and come right back, but in that time the doors will lock (I believe the car is understanding that the vehicle left Park). This will also happen after I start the car and sitting in idle, sometimes the doors will lock, unlock with a mind of their own (I believe that is in relation to the P indicator flickering).
The only similar thread I found was for the Gear Position Sensor (https://acurazine.com/forums/third-g...switch-892223/), but I am not experiencing any other symptoms listed in that thread.
The transmission is at 5AT and is not experiencing any flaring, and slippage of gears, no blinking lights, etc. It has been doing this occasionally since I've purchased the car last year but it has been increasing in frequency over the last few weeks.
Probably not relevant to this issue but the ATF was done at the Acura dealership with DW-1 about 35,000km (22,000mi) ago, and I did the pressure switches myself about 17,000km (10,500mi) ago. Transmission filter has not been replaced since I've purchased the vehicle (I don't think the previous owner did it either).
Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

My guess is on the gear position sensor. The symptoms the DIY you linked describe sound to me like a catastrophic failure of the sensor. Your sensor may just be starting to get on it's way out, with P, the most used position on the car, wearing out first.
I have not had any of the issues though, only taking a stab in the dark. Good luck!

I forgot about this thread.
To add to the issue, it seemed to do it more when the vehicle was sitting on an incline (nose up). Temperature was also a factor as the colder it was, the more it would act up, even though it only happened infrequently. I found it was less likely to occur once the car was warmed up (eg. After driving), versus a short time (eg. Moving the car to a different parking spot).
I had an issue when I moved the car from one parking spot to another (nose up slight incline) in January 2019 (-30 degrees Celsius) and the gear indicator couldn't find park or any gear. I had the shifter in park, but it wouldn't let my shift out of park to try to cycle it, nor would it let me remove the key after turning the car off since it didn't know it was in park. I ended up letting the vehicle warm up for about a half hour, then used the shifter bypass to cycle it down and back up and it found the gears again after that.
I did end up replacing the Gear Position sensor with an OEM unit, and the issue seemed to have been resolved.
However, it has briefly occurred once since replacing (nose up incline), but I have a feeling it's due to needing to replace the lower Transmission Mounts. I'm guessing since they need to be replaced, there's more play in the transmission movement, which causes the switch to move more than it should. Electronics are not my speciality so I may be way off base. I think this results in it not making a proper connection. The new switch has less issues since the contacts are not yet worn out on it, whereas the old switch had worn down.
Just figured I'd update this since I don't think it's a common issue and it may help someone.
