Failed Inspection: E-Brake not engaging
Failed Inspection: E-Brake not engaging
Hi, I need help with this. I went to do inspection for my TL 2008 with 133k miles and got a fail for e-brake not engaging. I didn't know they check e-brake. Anyway, anyone know how to fix or replace e-brake? Maybe I should get it check out and see what's wrong with it? Any help would appreciated. Thanks.
Take off the rear rotors and inspect the e-brake system.
You can try adjusting the star adjuster with a flat head screwdriver to tighten the ebrake and do the same on the other side.
Check to see if the brake shoes are still good. Make sure the springs are all good.
Luckily the ebrake is all mechanical so fixing it is not hard.

If it's not too far out of adjustment, you can adjust it from inside the car... just open the center console, remove the rubber mat and plastic cover in the bottom of it, then use a ratchet and socket to tighten the nut. Don't over-do it... you don't want it to drag while you're driving, but if it's not holding the car at all now, you're probably fine turning it in quite a bit.
My brake didn't do anything when I bought it... I adjusted it all the way in, and now it barely holds when fully pulled. I need to adjust it at the brakes, but the center console was quick and easy (and enough to pass inspection... the inspection station I go to always checks the parking brake).
