Engine trouble - car starts then stops

Was in the process of selling my old 2006 TL 6 speed until it gave me problems last night. Now it's sitting in my driveway for now. Car started making rattling/loud ticking noises during coasting then it dies while driving. Then wouldn't start, towed it home. In the morning, she starts but runs rough with rattling noise at top intake cover and need to apply accelerator pedal to keep her running. Smoke + fuel smell coming from dipstick and oil cap after shut down. Do i need a new engine? Pulling spark plugs now...

Timing belt skipping teeth perhaps?

It doesn't even try to start now. Quiet. Even threw in the other car's battery

Pull the timing belt cover off and see what it looks like under there. Hopefully it's not the timing belt, but if it was misfiring on all cylinders and now it won't crank, I'm not quite sure where else to start.

ECU fried? Check plugs and coils...

Are you sure there was no over rev?

Rattling/ticking noise under a valve cover is never a good sign.

OP, check the condition of the + battery cable. At this age, it could be corroded to the point where it's conductivity could be compromised.

I checked the sparkplugs and coils, all good. Checked EGR even though it wouldn't cause this much trouble it was clear.
The rattling noise started the day before and then kaput.
Ran low on oil a few weeks ago, pretty sure the lifters are seized from running low or the oil pump has failed. Can't rebuild this thing at 410,000km so selling as is for someone with time to put in a new engine. Thanks for the help.

So last time I checked, 410,000 kilometers works out to just shy of a quarter-million miles; assuming the rest of the car is in good shape, the fact you have a rare 6-Speed model should make it fairly easy to sell, even with the lame motor. Good luck and keep us posted.

i should have mentioned it, but in the 3 years owning it I actually ran it low many times, she's a burner. Didn't think it would be the problem. Selling the 6MT will be breeze indeed just not as much as i would have wanted.

At 265K miles, my J32A still only burns less than 1/2 quart of oil over a 7500 mile MID interval. In over 13 years, I've never had to add oil between oil changes. These engines are not "burners", something happened to cause your engine to be a "burner"...
