Question Electronic Control Module Question

Hi all...
This is a noob question, so bear with me. What is the Electronic Control Module? I was having problems starting my TL (2-3 cranks before start and a rough idle). Took the car in for service and they said they replaced the ECM as directed by a Service Bulletin. The invoice also says "UPDATED PGM-FI". What does that mean?

Would appreciate any help.

The ECM is the main computer that mostly controls engine functions. It is also connected to the rest of the computers(modules) in the car to monitor them.

just guessing but it looks like when they replaced the brains they also gave it an updated

program for the fuel injection PGM-FI makes sense!
