I had enough of both of those to get Acura to replace mine with a new one for less than you paid for
your pre-cracked used dash though.

And yes, I could do brain surgery. Especially on you since there wouldn't be much at risk.

Gets someone else to do a task and then proceeds to tell someone how to do that task.

No, I told you to accept your cracked dash and leave the cover on because I've been down this road before with a NEW dash that immediately showed
signs of the weakness. You then proceeded to go buy another used dash that's known to for sure fail.

Then you're arguing if my experience and logic in other arenas should apply to asking details on the menial portions of the task like "her uh der, are the screwses are hard to git at and break free?".

Ask away, do what you want...obvi
but don't act like you know what the fuck you're doing.
Especially over someone with more than likely more wrench time and fuck ups than you (even though you keep clinging to the fact that I didn't do this particular task for some reason).

And in case it's not clear...
I hope you are able to get it done and I actually hope the replacement never cracks for you. That would be fucking awesome, obviously.

Thats my fear of replacing my dashboard too..
I bought some black elastic material at a fabric store.. I may try to glue it down.
Its another one of my Unfinished Projects! haha

I would like to replace my 05 vent cover with the one you see on the table, because it has a hole for the light meter. But I do not think I can replace it without pulling out the entire dashboard. Because There are screws underneath... what do you think?

No, you cannot replace it without pulling out the dash. The screws are towards the windshield side.

Ya I think I saw the screw in a picture a while ago.. like a a year ago.. on the net.
Seems like I remember just 1 screw on 1 end that is holding it in place.

Wait, are you talking about the dash window defogger vent or the driver and passenger side vents?

The passenger side end vent is held on with three screws. Driver side is much longer and held on by one screw.

Didn't realize there had been more activity on this thread.
I seldom come on here anymore and didn't receive any notifications in the past.

It's really pretty straight forward on the removal (just takes too long)
The only snag i hit was at first i didn't completely remove the steering column from the parts car (thought it was saving time) -- but you HAVE TO.
It has a splined slip-joint , so mark it to make the re-install go back straight.

Now - my update -
after storing my prized perfect replacement dash in the garage ... safely ... in a place with nothing around it to fall or etc...
I checked on it this Spring , about ready to tackle it.

The SOB had cracked while stored safely INSIDE my garage for a little over a year.
SOB - WTF !
From the speaker grille to defrost vent, and another long one on top of the hump in front of the steering wheel.
None around the airbag - but its ruined nonetheless.
If they were easy to R&R , it is still much better shape than my original - and i would do it --- but its just not worth it for all the time and trouble involved.

Fcck this
I'll go the Coverlay Route

I wanted to stomp and kick and throw this dash shell around like a rag doll , and then set it on fire.

But i kept it [outside now] in case anybody needs a picture of some hidden area.
It will go to the dump whenever the next time is that we are hauling anything off.
Sitting outside for almost 6 months now - and no more cracks have appeared. LoL

The only good thing about is .... glad i didn't waste my time installing it in the car right away.

After decades of building cars, no manufacturer has an excuse for cracking dashboards especially if they have less than 75k miles. I think some had it happen like under 50k miles

This is worse than I thought...this just means time is the enemy and it WILL happen no matter what...probably batches of them last longer than others.

I guess since it's out of the car you technically can mount the cover or some cool custom fiberglass on it before swapping them out!

Thanks for such a detailed thread. I'm probably the only one who's not swapping dashes because of cracks. I'm doing it to swap out my under dash harness from auto to manual. Once I finally do my swap. Parts car was to badly damaged to save it.

Go to the local Acura dealership and ask which tech normally does it.
Then go talk to the guy after getting an oil change requesting that tech.
Bring flowers.
Then ask if he is willing to do a swap on the side for cash. Techs like straight cash, homey.

Ok I bought my 2006 Acura TL fresh from the dealer. In 2012, I noticed my dash starting to crack around the passenger side airbag. Took it to the Dealer, but they said since there was no recall and Acura had looked at, and determined that it wasn’t a safety issue with TLs, that they had no responsibility to help me out. Went to another Dealer, and after quite a bit of haggling and fighting with Acura and the Dealer, they agreed to install a new dash for $750. In 2016, that Dash also began to crack in the same place (and mind you, I kept my Acura in the garage out of the sun when I can). Took it back to the Dealer and again argued with them, and Acura about the Dash. They could care less and refused to help, saying it was the owners responsibility and they had already helped me once before, so had fulfilled their obligations. A new dash quote was $1500 (ridiculous). Three weeks later, a friend’s 2008 Acura was totaled in a rear end collision and he had just had his dash replaced just 2 years prior and was still in mint condition. Bought and removed the dash, then him and I put it in over a weekend. I’ll be damned if not 1 year later, it developed the infamous cracks right at the passenger side airbag area, then right down the middle. I said screw it and put a Coverlay on it. I was avoiding Coverlay option, because I felt that it would make the car look ghetto, but honestly, I couldn’t be happier with the Coverlay.. My Acura doesn’t look ghetto at all and now after 3 years, it still looks great and I am happy. Definitely look at the Coverlay as an option. What’s really sad though, is that I have owned an Acura since 1991, and I presently own 3 Acuras. I am looking at buying a new car, but because of this ordeal and now knowing how Acura has shafted so many TL owners over this faulty dash issue,, I wont even consider buying a new Acura and am looking at other brands like Lexus. Congrats Acura... You lost an $85,000+ new car sale over a probably $500 part. Not a wise business sense to me. Anyways good luck guys. With all the hassle of having to find a suitable dash, installing it and waiting for it to just crack again, try the Coverlay option. I did and am happy.

If I were to grab a 3G for shits
I'd get a cheap type-s with a fubar'd dash
shave all the cracks, fill it properly and texture
Then vinyl leather wrap it

I told the guys at Acura the other day I'll just call it the "Dali" Edition...
something clever...it's funny because if you don't think about the fact that
it is a cracked dash it actually looks artistic.

i am not sure why the the cup holder and the storage compartment had to be taken apart. I wonder what a dealership would charge for all this.
Seems like a massive undertaking for me and i am sure for most people. do you have pics of the replacement dashboard you bought? the top and underside of the dashboard?

I ran across a dash from a 2007 Acura TL at my local junk yard. The price on the dash is $49.99. My dash isn't cracked yet, but I'm highly debating going back to pull it after reading through this thread. What do you guys think? Here are a few pictures.

That's very cheap, but it's a lot of work to pull that thing out.
