Question Cracked Windshield

Hi Folks,

Last Friday morning I was driving under Rt 91 on the Rt 2 rotary in Greenfield, MA when I was pelted with rock blast from overhead (Rt 91 Mass Highway workers). The windshield was cracked and the driver's side glass and body sustained minor damage.

Any advise on the insurance claim process? Is there a special type of windshield glass I should insist on?

Thanks,
TL-Rocket

Best course of action would have been to stop immediately and visit the construction area and make a report. Now that has passed, I would call the insurance company and probably can get it fixed under comp if you have chosen that option.

A few years ago I had a similar experience as I passed under a bridge that was undergoing renovation. The TL was covered with a white substance that set very quickly. Stopped and made a report, then proceeded to a self service car wash and with a little elbow grease the car was returned to normal.

Good luck

Yes-- the OEM is an acoustic glass windshield, with multiple layers, so the TL should get an acoustic glass windshield replacement.

There are several threads here on regarding the different brands of windshields, though.

call MADOT and complain. They get that stuff all the time. They probably won't require you to have stopped at the scene (since that would have been dangerous anyway).

As already mentioned, I would've gone straight to the construction site and filed a complaint with the foreman or got contact info for the contractor's insurance company. I would still go back and file with the contractor. It may not be too late and they may already be primed to take your claim (i.e. you probably are not the only one it happened to).

As far as the windshield itself, yes, you want an OEM or OEM equivalent acoustic windshield. There are several threads on windshield glass, but all of the aftermarket companies seem to make very acceptable acoustic replacements.

When the time comes to make your claim (with either the contractor or your insurance company) you can always request OEM glass. They may or may not honor an OEM request (An OEM windshield is about $250 more than aftermarket). (I am with USAA and they did honor my OEM request). If not, you'll be fine with non OEM replacement glass.
