crack in the subframe-help.

A couple of months ago, during a snow storm, I ended up hitting a curb very hard on a turn with my front driver's side tire. I ended up cracking the brake disc and some other parts. I fixied everything to make the car driveable again. However, I was told I had a small crack in the subframe causing the car to drift slightly to the left. It's been driving me crazy now and I want to fix it. I was told the whole repair would be about 2K.

Anyone know of any other options? Maybe welding the crack in the subframe rather than replacing the entire thing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If it's drifting, that means it's bent and likely cracked. straightening it is ok, but the problem might re-occur sooner or later and as well it'll be a bit weaker. A new subframe is going to be a whole lot better since it's going to be stronger and perfectly straight.

Thanks for the response. Do you have any idea how much it would cost or the cost of the subframe itself?

50200-SEP-A03 ACURA TL FR. SUSPENSION SUB-FRAME 2004 TL $1575.85 $1181.89

With the list on the subframe of $1575, it's hard to believe that the entire replacement is only going to run $2000.
Depending on your location, there are some used frames avaiable $500/$1000.

That's why we have insurance.

yeah buddy.. make an insurance claim.. if you don't have comprehensive coverage then get get a subframe from another TL at a junkyard.. it'll be your cheapest bet.

My car was in a major accident a few years ago. One of the things that pushed the final bill way higher than the adjuster's original estimate was the replacement of this subframe. They have to pull the motor to replace it.

My car was repaired with the front clip of another TL that had been rear-ended. Despite having this part available to them from the clip, the body shop & adjuster bought a new one and hired some specialized weld shop to install it.

Good news is, my car has never had an alignment problem - I have been running Pilot Sport A/S tires for a couple of years with no uneven wear. Bad news, I will have to drive my car for a long time to extract the value out of it, since I would now have to give it away to sell it.

Unfortunately, the more expensive the car costs, the more the owner stands to loose when its damaged.

I did exact same thing on 05 TL.

I replaced bunch of stuff including CV, disc, wheel and then finally replaced subframe.

DO NOT try to pull or weld the frame. I spent $300 trying and it didn't go anywhere. Those aluminium subframes are expensive but proper way to do it. Lesson learned. In total it cost me around $5000 to get everything in order.

Just had this happen to my 2005 TL. Haven't replaced the subframe yet but apparently they're about $500 at a junkyard and labour would be extensive. (8-10 hours?) I'm trying to find success stories with welding lol. My crack is really tiny.

Welding isn't the problem. The problem is to pull the subframe into correct position before welding.
When involved years ago, many parts need to be removed to get the car in position on the frame rack
ready to have the frame pulled into correct position, then welded.

I'd be concerned that the break compromised the frame integrity and with the lessened strength, could the frame crack more.

Oh shit is that the subframe? I replaced mine for $900. I would get a mechanic you trust to double check it so it doesn't crack through one day randomly

What would've caused this? It's never been wrecked or anything. I'm slightly concerned, yet there's no performance issue

You won't feel anything except maybe a very subtle alignment problem. Do not assume that it's ok just because you haven't felt anything. My subframe felt the same from November when I hit the curb. until I checked in April when switching to summers, the crack went from a hairline to almost a cm gap.

Luckily I changed it a month after that because when the mechanic took out the cracked frame, the inner side was cracked even worse.

Just ask your mechanic for advice. It doesn't hurt.

I just sent a guy a picture and he said he's gonna have his mechanic look at it tomorrow. Thanks for input. Trying to have it fixed sooner than later. I just dropped 9 grand on this and found this three days later. Hopefully it will be an affordable fix.

Dang.

A pre purchase inspection probably would have shown you this and any other issues with the car.

yeah your probably right, I did a pretty through check on everything, didn't jack it up tho. It came from an infinity dealership, so I'm speaking with the seller in regards to the issue as well. Very reputable dealer. I think if it's serious they will probably split cost with me

How do you know that for certain?

And LOL at the "reputable dealership" for accepting a trade-in in that condition.

If they are truly reputable, they'll make amends for their mistake.

post picture of subframe that looks like it went 30 mph over a curb
...car was never wrecked

Just because the body is straight doesn't mean it wasn't wrecked
It bottomed out pretty hard

passenger side wheel. Yeah it's concerning. Structure looks good maybe just a bad weld. Hopefully it can be re welded and it will stay intact

Agreed. In addition to getting the new cracks looked at I would have those welds inspected at the same time.

Aluminum sub frames doesn’t like to be scrap or take hits too well. See if you have a good mechanic tig weld it or you can always replace it
