Code P0420 Help Please

I have a 2005 TL with about 125,000 miles on it. Should I replace the cat converter or the 02 sensor or both to solve this issue? Advice Much appreciated, thanks

Normally, if you get a bad smell its your cat.

Switch the O2 sensor first and delete the code. Drive it and see if it comes back on.

It does smell but not very often. Check engine light came on and this is the code it gave me. I did see a change in my fuel usuage though. Should I replace the cat as well as the 02 sensor?

I think I should just replace both of them. I've had this vehicle since 2008 and I have never had to replace any of the two since I bought it. I have to do one or both because the engine light won't go away, just wanted to get opinions on it before I spend about $500 on parts unless you guys can help me out on that too. Let me know peoples, once again info is greatly appreciated as a proud TL owner. Thanks

the cat is the most expensive part.

if you do replace something, replace the 02 sensor first!

if i remember correctly, the cat is upwards of $900
