climate info and clock has no lights

hi guys im having a problem with the climate information and clock on my 06 base, basically it started a few months ago when i pulled up in my driveway and seen a light white smoke coming from the steering wheel like right between the cluster and wheel and it smelled like burnt wire and plastic so i turned off the car and disconnected the battery as fast a possible and waited and when i reconnected the battery it was fine with no smoke and started up like normal but i looked at my clock and it wasnt on and neither was my climate info, every thing works on climate control like buttons and lights on the side but its black on both screens until i put a light on it and then i can see everything, the weird thing is when i turn the key to start then car then clock lights up fine but not the climate info until i let go of the key, also i stripped the climate control part to take a look and i notice that when i flick the key forward the climate info lights flick on for a split second and goes back black, so all in all i have stripped the steering column and see nothing wrong and climate control, i have no idea what to look for so i would like to hear from you guys if you can help me out

ps: i have the blue and white light climate info and clock not the black and white 1

pics?

Did you buy this car second hand and someone went and installed LED lights in there? Something seems to have shorted behind there.

You may need a new climate control. They're not expensive and you can get one from a part out or kijiji.
