So a while back, my climate control screen on my 04 Acura TL went dark while the heat was still pumping. At the same time, my external temperature reader stopped working. The heat is still set at the same place it was before the screen went out, but I am unable to adjust the temperature at all. The defrost does work though, which is what has gotten me through the winter. Now that it is starting to get warm again, I need to get this replaced.
I've changed the fuse, but had not luck with that. I've also taken it in to a mechanic and he told me I needed an all new panel and quoted me $3000 parts and labor. I've driven this car a total of 7000 miles in the last 2.5 years. Not really excited about dropping that kind of cash on the car, but I also don't want to drive around with heat blasting in my face this summer. I'm fairly certain they were trying to take advantage of me being a female and my obvious lack of knowledge of auto repair. The exact quote broke down to $2500 for parts and $500 for labor.
Any ideas on other troubleshooting? If not, what are the odds that I can get the parts cheaper? I've looked around and it seems to range between $100 to $300 for the panel, but I don't really know if anything additional is needed. I have the panel with the separated radio and climate control screens (top picture). Would I be able to use one with the full screen (second picture), possibly with navigation? Like I said, cheaper is better since I don't generally drive more than 2000 miles a month most months.
You won't be able to use the navigation panel with your non-navigation panel unless you do the whole conversion, but that's a whole other story that's not related to your issue.
Doing some searching, it seems that the climate controls do not work if there is no reading for the outside ambient temperature.
I would start by unplugging the battery for an extended period of time and reconnecting it to see if you get anywhere.
I would recommend some more diagnostic. I will look for some info if I have some more free time.
If you decide to go with replacing that screen:
0. Does the radio display works?
1. To use panel with navigation, and have navigation, you would need to put a little bit more parts (navi drive, GPS antenna, etc.) than the screen itself. It would be expensive... and kind of pointless.
2. To replace only the screen that you have right now, search for "#39050-SEP-A0" - that's the part number. You can pick them as low as ~$40 on ebay. Just look on the photos as some of them are pretty messed up.
3. If you feel like doing the work yourself, there's the video showing about how much work it requires:
would be really nice, as it comes with different tips, magnet (to pick up screws) and it's ratcheting, but picking something simpler will do the job just fine, and some plastic wedge to take the panels held by clips, something like
Where are you located? Maybe if there is an acurazine member near you that has worked on their display and or radio can help.
The most complicated thing is there are a lot of parts that have to come off to get to it.
If you diagnose the climate control & radio display is faulty, I got one here I removed from my car, 04 base model. It's free for yours to take, only need to pay for shipping from Canada.
For your information, used AC display and controls go for around $50 on eBay as peter6 noted. The disassembly is not terribly difficult but it's a bit tedious the first time.

The only tools that you need are screwdriver (mostly philips), something like https://www.amazon.com/Kobalt-13-in-...ng+screwdriver

4. Never come back to the place that quoted $3000 for doing the job. It's just... I don't have the words. They tried to f*** you really bad.
1. Yes, all parts of the radio still work.
2. Thank you for the part number! I've been browsing, so that part number will definitely help make the search easier.
3. Thanks for this as well! I might try to do it myself. I've been quoted between $150 -$200 to have a shop do it.
4. Yeah, I won't ever be visiting them again. They were far too expensive for everything I had done.

Oh man, if I could get someone in my area to help, that would be amazing! Anyone in the Denver area interested, I pay with booze and food!
hnk2108 I can't reply to your PM because your inbox is full.
But for your information, I don't have pictures but I can take some if needed. Shipping probably around $15-$20 depending on the weight. I'd have to check.
